cheers, we had problems getting the front wheel alingment anywhere near. because of the offset of the wheels, they fouled on the front of the arch. i have cut the arch front, and pushed the front wheels back with adjustable tie bars so the sit in the 'middle' of the wheel arch. this gave crazy negative camber. i fited on car adjustable minispares items, bit had to shorten them so they would have more positive adjustment. we are close ish now, but i need to get the front wheels allinged as soon as i have an mot on it.

paul they are only 7x13s. the offset is quite wide on them as you can see, the rear arches are filled nicely. i have the metro drive flanges on the front so the arches dont quite cover the wheel at the front. i like the look of 10s but prefer the look of 13s

i have taken a few more pics after i gave the car a quick wash. i can feel that the paint surface is a bit 'gritty', so am going to give it a cut back with g3 and polish it all up again. i then have a cover go go on it so no more of the particles in the garage can sit on the paint. i have just a very minor few jobs to do before the mot - i need to sort a problem the drivers side handbrake and sort the leak on the bottom hose. otherwise thats about it. i have got it inusured from next month so hope to get the mot sorted next month sometime

i hope to get time this year to do a couple of shows in it. dan

its been a while since i updated this, due to lack of time and the fact that my phone camera is crap! i got the car on the road this summer, it made around 130 bhp and 130 pounds of torque on the rollers at 10psi. refurbished a cheap second hand turbo phil head which its currently running. i will upload the rr printout when i get chance

its running very nicely and always puts a smile on my face! i have ben part collecting for the last few months, i am going to srtip one of my spare engines in the next few weeks and send the block for machining. the new build will envolve a quaife atb, billet phase 2 cam, 18cc forged accralites (+73.5), and around 18psi of boost!

hope to find enough time to build up the next engine with a view to changing it over the winter months

also need to get some decent pics done!

cheers, dan

Its been a while but thought I would post up the current engines rr results from earlier in the year.

There have been a few bits that I need to sort on the car which I aim to do over the winter. There was a reaction to the paint on the rear panel that cracked right down to the metal. I sorted this, along with a couple of other marks, and repainted the rear end a couple of weeks ago. Not ideal with the low temps/moisture in the air this time of year, but I am happy with the result. Its all back together now and looking better than ever.

The gearbox in my car currently has a cracked casing, so I plan on pulling the engine and replacing it with a potentially more powerful unit that I am currently building. I am going to rebuild the gearset into a different casing. I stripped a mg metro turbo engine down that I bought years ago with a melted piston. I sent it for overboring but the block was porous.

Luckily I could use the hardened crank (it had the CAM 6581) as well as the rods etc. I picked up a block on a 1293 overbore with bore damage (done by a well known engine builder, though im not sure that he trades anymore). It looks like the engine block had been overbored but not honed afterwards. The boring marks could still be seen. The guy who did my machining was shocked but not surprised when he saw the tuning details stamped into the block! I have this block overbored to 73.5, new cam bearings, skimmed (deck height aprox 8 thou). It also has a centre main strap.

we have previously fitted pistons using the cooker to heat the conrods, this time we used a blow torch and the pistons flew onto the rods, it was much much easier

I have so far fitted the metro turbo crank, rods, 18cc accralite forged pistons, phase 2 cam, lightened followers. We got the pistons fitted tonight, and everything torqued up. I am waiting for my counter sunk bolts to arrive so that I can fit the timing gear and time the cam in.

i will get some more pics up with the progress.

i dont get that much time to work on the car, but have got a lot to get done over the winter - drill and swage holes in the bonnet for the intercooler air flow, repaint the front end as there are some very small marks in the paint, replace the engine, build the gearbox into a new casing, sort the rear brakes, replace the ball joints and pass side cv joint, im also thinking about attempting my first ever turbo rebuild. hoping to get the majority of this sorted by feb/march so that i can get it tuned up for the summer!

its been a while and i havent made as much progress on this as i would have liked due to the weather and work. i have fully rebuilt what could be considered a t3 hybrid . i have fitted this to a benross ported exuast manifold, and a turbo phil ported elbow that i bought some time ago second hand. also cleaned up the wastgate housing, grinding the casting marks out, and matched it to the turbo phil elbow to eliminate the 'step' that was there before. the turbo is back together, im just in the prosess of making an actuator bracket, which i hope to get time to complete this week (will get some pics up once its done). have the engine built up and times in etc, also all of the car running gear sorted, need to find a weekend or a few days off togethr so that i can do the majority of the engine swap in one go...

wastegate..

Hi, it’s been a while but have made some good progress. Have pulled the engine out.

As previous posts I have built up the new engine. I have also rebuilt the gearbox into a new case as the existing one was cracked and leaking oil everywhere. Changed the detent balls and springs, one of the synchro hubs, and selectors. Also downed the final drive from the 2.9 to the 3.1. changed the four pin for a quaife atb.

Got that all back together now. Expecting the clutch backplate (lug machining) and head (guides) back this week, hope to get that all built up and maybe drop the engine in towards the end of the week. Time is a bit tight for me at the moment but have a couple of days off this week to hopefully have a look at this

Also thought id post up a couple of pics of the turbo that I rebuilt a little while ago. Its a hybrid t3 item. I put new journal bearings in there, 360 degree thrust, matched the wastegate to the second hand turbo Phil ported elbow that I have. Also fitted it to a Benross worked exhaust manifold. I plan to fir my -31 actuator, hopefully with the preload set at around 18 psi.

my camera isnt the best on this phone - hopefully these pics are a little better quality than the previous ones..

has been a while as the gearbox and engine gave up on my daily cooper. have that temporaraoly sorted for now whilst I wait to have the spare block machined.

as for the turbo, I have it running etc now. have been doing some work to the bonet - it was starting to look a bit rough - a few small marks, a couple of dents, the outer edges were also kinked. welded some flat bar to the under side to stiffen it up. that caused quite a bit of distortion to the skin, which I had to take out. also drilled and swaged some holes to get some airflow over the intercooler - swaginf these holes was a nightmare, would not recommend that to anyone!

am working until next week, hope to get the top coat on mid week and see exactly how it has come out.

if I can get the bonnet sorted, it MOT and rolling road time...

cheers, dan

Nice job!! How did u find rebuilding the turbo, did you use a kit? Mine could do with a freshen up!

turbo was pretty straight forward. careful disassembly (including marking it up so the standard balancing can be used). needed to get some mini circlip pliers, wasn't too bad a job really. however still not driven it so it boosts so will have to wait and see!!

its been a long time since I updated this thread. finally got the car back on the road with new engine/gearbox/turbo setup. had it rolling roaded at 160 bhp, 145 pounds of torque at just 13psi. its a bit of an animal to drive now - much quicker than before!

I have another thread somewhere on here but will just post up a pic of the results to my build thread (this one)

also got a pic of the car at its first day out of the year - a local cider festival last weekend

hopefully the weather will hold out so I can get some good use out of the car over the summer. still getting some teething problems which im slowly working through.

hope to do a couple more mods and adjust the boost at some point. its quick enough for now though!

need to get some decent pics of the car, not really got many since its been on the road!

cheers, dan

its been a while since I have updated this. I have not been able to use the car for the last few months due to breaking my foot. so it has been looking a bit neglected recently. the rims were covered in overspray and generally looking a bot sorry for themselves. though I would get busy and clean them up. amazing what an hour of elbow grease will achieve...

also cleaned and treated the sunroof.

as im still quite limited as to what I can do I plan to sort the paintwork out this week, im not a 'detailing' type guy but I have made a few purchases recently and hope to bring the cars looks back up to scratch.

I did hope to up the boost towards the end of the summer, maybe get it back on the rollers, but I think that this might have to wait until next year!
