leeds/wakefield.

i have been thinking about putting three holes through the big web between 1 and 2 etc, and 3and 4. laying the crank on its side as in the pics and drill vertically,it would increase the surface area to heat treatment quite a lot, not monsters, maybe 14mm in the middle and 10mm out near the backdrilling,
thoughts,

carl

I have a good idea of where it's going to let go if it ever does. *surprised*

These Studies are only for comparison between designs and shouldn't be taken as gospel.
They also assume the surface of ALL the models are 100% smooth and the material used is Cast Iron.

Are the results of these stress analysis for a loaded up crank? IE does it take into consideration the reciprocating mass, two pistons and rods up and two down?

Varl. I get your point in reducing weight, but drilling those three holes won't do fuck all. It's so close to the centreline of the crank.

as carl says, it will increase the heat threated are quite much though...So may not be a stupid idea, but as a rotating assembly lightening, it wont mean much.

The study only looks at the crank and it's rotating mass. I'd need a CRAY computer to start adding the rods and pistons but i'll have a look and see whats involved.
This current study runs for about 2.5hrs on a DualCore 3Ghz PC with 4Gig of ram.

As an all out racer that Carl is, I would do it. It may have no benefit to reciprocating mass, but it is mass off the entire weight of the car.
OK it wont show any extra speed, but lots of little bits like that really do add up. Thats why my car fully road legal weighs less than 470Kg and is quicker than all but 1 of the turbo D class.

Its a Minisprint. Steel bodyshell, aluminium doors, bootlid, bonnet. Anything I could refabricate in alloy, I have. Anything that could be trimmed up/ lightened, I have. Tubular front suspension, alloy rear suspension, rear disks, alloy fuel tanks, etc etc. Lots of work.

Jimster - 13.42 @ 101mph was my best time with the car weighing 502Kg. It was 470Kg last year at Avon but my back brakes were stuck on and I only managed 13.7. This year theres engine management, new dogbox going on it and some new lightweight ideas to do. If I hadnt cut my finger off just before christmas, it would be about 450Kg in time for Avon this year but I dont think I have time now. Next year..............

Its a standard subframe (lightened) with tubular suspension.

Ill sort some pics of the rear brakes, they are a billet alloy hub, meonite disk and tiny Wilwood 2 pot alloy callipers.

done it lol, just need to clean the bores up over the w/end. a fooking pain in the arse setting the crank up dead level in both planes so the holes pass through the web in a uniform manor. i think iv'e kept the holes out of the stress area, but hey ho,!! lol.

that FE stuff is bloody good,
