Yet more snails pace progress, work is still getting in the way of garage time. Caught in a vicious circle, working overtime to fund the project means I don't have the time to work on it. Think I've only got one day off work now until christmas eve *indifferent*

Anyway, the front end got welded. It's still removeable, welded me some tabs inside the wings and A panels to bolt it together and there's some bolts at the tops of the inner wings to hold it on.
I still need to make a new pair of mounts for the front that'll double as radiator mounts too.

Also found some more lovely previous owner workmanship *angry*

Also got some time on Ant's lathe at the weekend, neither of us have any training on how to use them so it's a bit trial and error most of the time but we're enjoying learning.

Will machine some of the excess meat off it, just wanted to take it home and trial fit it before getting carried away.

That's it for now, next update in 2017 at this rate I guess..

I'm trying to find some LED headlights with an orange halo to use as the indicator that don't look like ass

Interesting idea,

I saw these the other day which seem to be adapted from landy defender lights, I thought one of the defenders had inicators in the headlight so might be worth a look if they are ok for you style wise.

There's some on tmf that i'm sure you've seen.
But like you say, they all look nothing like the originals n don't really suit a mini

Yeah those are the type i've seen, can't bring myself to fit them as they look so shite. you can pick them up way cheaper from china too.

I'll probably end up modifying a set of normal halogen angel eye's to flash orange I think.

Could you not drill the back of the headlight for a bulb holder and then use the chrome bulbs so it was less obvious?

if the halo idea doesnt pull off,

All worth a look, I'm not set on halo's they were just the easiest way I could think of getting the indicator in the headlight.

I did a quick google a while ago thinking that mk1 golfs would have something like that already available.

yeah, unfortunatly I think the uindicators do need to be outside of the headlamp reflector to be usable. or a seperatye reflector like the cibie Biode

That's one of the reasons I was going with the halo idea Tom, figured you'd still be able to see them when the lights are on

Hi Nick,

Look at the spoiler, it fit better close to the air entrances on the front, you may need to form the metal to a perfect fitment, if you put the spoiler to low, it may drag to much down force and when lowering the car it could be a mess.

Really liking your rebuild, keep it on...

Regards,
Diogo

6 Monthly, long, drawn out, never ending project update.....still not finished but closer!

Hard to remember what I've done since the last update, I really should do it more often. I'll just throw a load of pics at the end for this one.

I've raised the engine up with some spacers under the mounts as the driveshafts were sitting at a horrible angle with how much i've lowered it. Which has caused me issues everywhere else like the downpipe now hitting the subframe, so I tilted the engine back slightly with the top steady to get a mm or two clearance, but now the plenum catches the scuttle and the actuator doesn't fit in the old place...
Finally got all those bits sorted I hope.

Finished all the exhaust hangers
Finished the fuel piping, mounting pump & filter etc..probably going to change the tank now though to one with a sender built in.
Remade the gear linkage and tower. Added a bronze bush to the housing to take out some of the slop.
Got the dash binnacle drilled and painted, ant's 3D printing me a couple of brackets to secure it to the dash bar.
Started trialling steering wheel button mounting options. May get Ant to 3D print me something nicer than my efforts so far.
Finished all the coolant pipework, made some rad support brackets and swapped to 2 smaller fans as the 12" didn't fit now the engine is higher.
Sorted all the intercooler pipework and got an upgrade from the old cossie one, just need to drill a couple of holes to mount it now I'm happy with the fit.
Had a bash at making angel eyes for indicators, can't get them bright enough so given up on that one for a while. Got some LED bulbs that do white and amber together so could use for sideleight and indicator, not sure yet.
Got my throttle pedal mounted to match up with the new pedal box
Wiper motor is mounted inside the car now too, extended the pipes and drive cable.

Picked up my head from Turbo Phil of Turbominis! Lovely looking thing, really happy with it.
Had a blonde moment and totally forgot offset valves meant my rockers wouldn't line up properly so another trip to Ant's lathe and considerable head scratching (still don't know what I'm doing but I can make some excellent swarf) had my rockers re-spaced so they're central on the valve stems again.

There's probably some other things I've forgotten.

Not many jobs left on my list now I don't think, mainly cosmetic stuff like cutting the front wings and mounting the arches/splitter/spoiler.

Next big job is the loom, got most of the stuff ready to go I'll just need to order connectors when I've got the thing laid out.

Hoping to have it done asap then off to paint. I really want to get it down at Avon for the TM/16V day at the end of Sept.
