I think you have to pull it and check, Ive buggered a few cranks and blocks now from thrusts going. I once changed mine at 10pm the night before a show just because Gavs wore out and mine were from the same batch I seriously doubt it! |

That doesn't sound good, I would want to check the thrusts as well. It seems to be a bigger problem than I appreciated when I built my engine. How much end float did the crank have? I think I had 3 thou and I found the first time I used the clutch the revs dropped from 1200 to 900 with a grey diaphragm. After about 50 miles the revs didn't really change. It would be useful to understand what is causing some thrusts to fail so early and others to be fine. |

I once put a thrust in backwards by mistake when building an engine, the half without the tab. So effectively the steel backing was facing the crank thrust face and it did exactly as you describe, touch the clutch and it stalled. I was daft enough to ignore it for a few days and when I did eventually pull the engine, the thrusts had completely disappeared and the crank had been rubbing against the main caps. Scrap crank and block...

Check your clutch adjustment carefully. That was at fault on our van's first engine and we absolutely mullered the thrusts and crank thrust face very very quickly.

Before you pull the engine, try and measure the end float at the front pulley. It may give you a clue as to what has happened. Saul Bellow - "A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."

I dont know what to do, When its sat at idle its fine and as soon as i press the clutch down the revs drop and it will stall. I think i will put a vid up tomorrow. I had the same thing, in my case it were the thrusts ![]() On the positive side it can be repaired.... there is nothing wrong with a A-series that a turbo can't fix.

Has it always stalled when you push the clutch down, or just started doing it? On 7th Oct, 2010 5haneJ said:

just started doing it mate. Bollocks, I hope its not thrusts. As paul says its a good idea to check the end float but it sounds like it may be a case of pulling the engine for inspection. On 7th Oct, 2010 5haneJ said:

Well I pulled it out and guess what it were the thrusts; some knob head put one in the wrong way round. It was lucky I had a spare crank in the shed as it will need dropped off at the machine shop.

that is a bit of a result all things considered - at least you can see where the problem originated instead of a handfull of theories |
