you've got to keep the BT yellow surely

It's a tough choice really. Yellow would be nice and original but think it may look better in a deep-ish red.

The van came out of it's winter hibernation today. Battery is deader than Elvis, so with a quick jump start it fired straight up (once I'd turned the fuel pump on :$).

I've pulled apart it's 'new' straight cut box. It's pretty obvious why the case broke through the diff housing.

There was no shim on the main bearing carrier, leaving the double roller looking like this:

Lay gear thrust washers where slightly worn...

The oil pick up was holed and covered in crap.

Obviously who ever built it didn't have a clue!. The gear set seems good, synchros are in good order. So it should build nicely into a new case (using all new bearings and thrust washers).

Do you think any of that could have been caused by any kind of abuse ?
(Like missed gear changes on full throttle at Santa Pod maybe ?)

Possibly but not in out posession. I bought this box autumn last year as damaged.

I can't take credit for the building of the gearbox. It came from my clubby with an exploded diff. Andy replaced the diff and fished the remains of the diff from the reverse gear. *smiley*

Nah, it'll be in my mini as is in the next week or two....

I think we're on borrowed time with the current helical box. With the s/c box I think we can up the power with one less thing to worry about. That one came up at a good price, so John just went and got it with out saying anything to me...

I'm pleasantly surprised by how straight forward gearboxes are to work on. The advice I got here - 'get a haines book of lies and JFDI' was good advice *smiley*

Well productive evening.

Engine out head off. Tops of the pistons look sweet with no visible det damage.

Planning on replacing the crank and flywheel so will whip the pistons out for a more careful look just to make sure. But pretty happy with the general condition of everything.

Andy should post a few pics up at some point.
