Well the gearbox cutting has started, and ive machined up a mock mainshsft for dimensioning. Hoping to get a machinig cost next week for the mainshaft.

Ive also found this nice peice of kit...A bit beyond my budget though!

Can that only be used on a sequential box Matt?

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

It looks to be just a 2 way electric linear actuator, so it could be used for anything with a sequential shift pattern I suppose.

The main advantage with it, is that it can adjust the shift speed according to the speed you press the button. So a quick press will be easy to acheive neutral...which is a bit of a ball ache to work out at the moment, as its kind of a half shift with my box. *oh well*

Are you thinking for your pickup?

Brand engineering - 01213444173 [ birmingham]

they make a lot of bespoke shafts - very good and not expensive
do a lot for the hillclimb crowd
do all the shafts for Mallock

ps - good luck - really like to see engineering thinking outside the box [well, inside in this case]*smiley*

Cheers for the info, I'll see what my local company quote me. They do alot of work for Prodrive etc..and looking at some of the work they are shit hot!

The first of many mods to the casing to enable the first gear to fit.

Next parts to remove are the reverse gear webbing and pick up mount. Still trying to work out best plan of attack for the webbing. *oh well*

Mods to the 1st motion shaft...Took a while to machine that down!

The mock up mainshaft. I'll get some pics up later of the mainshaft positioning in the box.

Whats the difference with the remote box internally then?

Ive started to attempt to machine down the bike shaft now, as the mock shaft didn't give me a definitive conclusion to whether everythnig fits ok. *oh well*

In that case I can't see why not. Reverse gear will be a bit of a squeeze mind. *oh well*

Well it looks like both standard bearings can be used and the standard roller bearing inside the 1st motion shaft. *happy*

Pics of machined down VFR mainshaft...Ive mastered sharpening lathe tools now!

If this works which im sure it will, youll have a new job of making gearboxes for people!

As for the boring the mainshaft most of the strength is in the outside, so youll probably be ok. Itd be a lot of money to get a new one made up.

Modifying the gear case a known wear spot is in the webbing above the big double row bearing.

I know KAD get round this by adding an extra bearing which is mounted through the side of the gearbox at the speedo drive end.

your definitely a bloke whose pushing the boundaries and i think its great!

Thanks for your comments.

I was on the same line of thinking with the hollow mainshaft, but it looks like making a new one will be not too much more money, and it allow me to extend the shaft a bit, which means I can make my life easier with the way reverse gear fits. :)

As the gearset is shorter than the mini one, a 10mm plate is needed to be attached to the cenre web for the bearing to run on. Im hoping this will also add a fair amount of strength to the web aswell.

Yeah cheers Nick. I spoke to David from ausmini (who was doing the conversion) and by the sound of things its no where near completion, so im not going to have any luck with finding out info of what to do.

Am I right in thinking that no one has ran one of these boxes before, that we know of?

so what is the plan matty, you looking to get a new mainshaft made up, or machine teeth in the input gear, and vxr mainshaft to join the two together?

Im getting a new mainshaft made up, 10mm longer with no hole in the centre. This should accomodate a reverse gear syncro next to the pinion gear.

The drive to the box actually goes in through the smaller input shaft (basically where the mini layshaft is).

The mini 1st motion shaft is just being used as mainshaft bearing support/idler to transfer the power for the idler drop gear to the new input gear. If that makes snese? *oh well*

ahh I got you buddy, would it be worth maching a large flat area on the old centre web an putting some CNC's massive stiffner plate in to stop the web breaking?

Thats the plan, Im just trying to work out how to get a cutting into the far side of the centre web (speedo side). The only way I can see of doing it, is to use a lager end mill horizontal, and attached it to the mill head in situ in the box.The only other way is to go through the diff housing end or from the top, but then the cutter would be 200-300mm long and cutting on the side. *oh well*

Have you still got acces to CNC Jim?

to be honest matt , i think i would cut out the centre web ,and the end web ,and make two 10mm plates to hold it all ,and have them welded in ?

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM
