So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

yep, i guess the valve must have gone tight in the guide, no marks on the stem though, bit of a thwack to the piston, but it will be ok.

the valve seat is not marked, (phew)

Ouch,

Looks like it stuck once, then rotated slightly after the head was bent (from the double indentation at the top of the photo).

Was it free again once cold, or was the stem bent on the working part (inside the guide) making it permenantly stuck ???

I suggest you go all the way around the top of the piston with feelers (down to the first ring) just to make sure the ally hasn't "spread" in that area.

sturdy old valve!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Good idea Rod, i will check to see if there is any "spread" to the crown.

the valve had unstuck once cooled, would go down, and return but not all the way (obviously)

I pulled no 3 exhaust too and tried that in the guide, it can be felt that no No 2 guide is slightly snugger, so i think its all down to reaming to the proper size.

i did ream at easter, but the reamer was shite, and didnt want to remove anything.

What is the concensus on reusing the guide?

If you can run a good reamer down it, I don't see why not. A good reamer will remove any pickup (if there is any you can't see) and make sure it's straight and parallel bore.

I've got one (I'll just go and check the size) which was good last time I used it (cast iron guides) you can borrow and try.

9/32"

I assume that's your size ???

I bought this (ages ago) when I fitted bronze guides to my Dolomite Sprint head but have used it since on a set of new Mini cast iron guides - yes, even cast iron guides squash down a bit when you press them in - and it was certainly good last time used.

You're actually better off using a good "used" one on bronze, a brand new one will tend to dig in and give a serrated finish.

Your very lucky that neither the valve or piston failed, could have been very expensive.
