bit of progress,

had the new brake set up on for a week or so now, works pretty good! pedal is a bit long though I could do with upping the Master cylinder bore to about 20mm, but the 39mm bore pistons in the front calipers seem to give a good ratio to the kad rears.

I poped a bleed vavlve on sunday so i can up the boost a bit, and found a get a bit of a funny boost response from the vnt, an intial spike, then it frops then comes up an stabalizes, like this.

response seems to be like this.

i'm thinkig a MBC (adjustable dawes valve) will help with this.

anyway, cranked it up to about a bar and it feels fairly quick, took shane for a short squirt yesterday, but once again i stupidly fogot to get some footage.*blush* sorry!

you could open a bit the valve with the adjustable screw, you'll not have full boost at 2000 , but the spike , will be far less.

I've got an MBC you can borrow to test your theory Joe.

Could your homemade actuator have a slight leak?

Hi mini13,

I've also got a 7 port head which I've had a couple of years. Eventually this year I got round to fitting it.

I had an issue with one of the 5 brass bungs on the head face leaking water in cylinder 4, basically steam cleaning the piston crown.

Anyway, sent it back and Minisport did the right thing and sorted it out this week (I hope). Probably under the 6 year consumer rule (which is handy to know about).

What I have noticed though is that both the solid outer brass bungs are partially within the firing ring area. I am wondered if this problem could repeat itself.

Have you had any issues with yours like this?

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

I checked the brass plus on mine when i pulled the head about 1000 miles ago, and they looked fine.

I have had the same issue on a 5 port as the brass plugs are in the same place, if the head has been hot (or even if it hasn't) they can loose their interferance fit and move causing the gasket to go.

Keith Calver once wrote somthing about tapping all his race heads an inserting a threaded plug, i tried it but ended up with a gape that would leak. In the end I tapered the holes with a 7 degree reamer and tuned up some tapered bungs to match, heated the head and pressed the bungs in with loctite, the got the head skimmed.

seemed to cure the issue on that head :)

Thanks for your quick reply.

LOL, i forgot about the 5 port positions of the brass plugs its either that long since I stared them in the face or I just forgot as its second nature.

I'm putting it back on this afternoon. So heres hoping it doesnt blow again!

Hows yours doing with your turbo setup. Have you RR'd it yet? or are you running it NA at the moment.

Cheers,

David

fingers crossed then but i think you'll be ok.

mines going pretty good on the turbo setup thanks, not without its issues , but i'm gradually bsorting them, i think i have the boost pressure spike sorted as of today, seem to have a solid 15-17psi until it gets to the top end where its set too rich then it misfires.

I really need to get it on the rollers, but with my luck recently i darn't especially as its currently my daily drive... i just cant afford it to go bang, especially as i've just knackered the girlfeinds car.

Glad you're getting it sorted. I supposed its all trial and error.

Head fitted fine tonight. No mayonnaise this time. Temps holding at 87 degrees. Took it out for a spin and started doing power runs to jet it up (on twin 40s), strangely enough with initial settings it seems to run well with more or less the same jets as the KAD engine. I've got a bag full of jets so will see how we go.

Will be interesting to see how your project pans out once you've done the rollers.

Cheers,

David

A little review on spark plugs which just happen to fit the 7 port head. Interesting perspective on which plug has the most projected length too. As this looks like a small issue with the 7 port heads.

I've got CR8E's (all I could get my hands on at the time) in mine at moment, but will be plumbing for the PMR8A's.

thats a good bunch of plugs!

for turbo stuff i think your best to stay away from the fine tip plugs,

the PMR8A's look good though.

i think your right there mate. my thoughts exactly. Like you I had issues with the plug not even peeping in the chamber. PMR7A gets a good write up but I dont know what the tip looks like on that one.
Even CPR8E looks longer than the CR8E (fitted in mine).

Seems the PMR8A is standard fit in some ferraris/maseratis lol. That probably explains the £9 a pop price.
