I have stripped my box today, N/A engine with only 98 Nm of torque. Box built new with only new parts 2000 miles ago! the layshaft from minispares cant be good! look at the pictures in the link: http://www.midtmini.com/index.htm

PS the diffpin is NOT from this engine! *surprised**happy*

*surprised*Well if thats what a mild n/a engine can do to them in a few miles it proves how cheaply manufactred they must be!!!

Ive just stripped an old metro turbo engine ive had for ages, not sure on its milage but the layshaft is in superb condition:):)

André's engine revs to 9300rpm, so a mild N/A engine it isn't :)

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

but why is such a poor product which bares little resemblence to a genuine rover layshaft sold as a geniune layshaft?

I hope not:) The laygear will rotate fast of course. But its not like I have been running 9300 all day. its a 1071 BTW.

Just because the engine revs higher does not mean that the laygear nessasarly will do.

The speed the laygear rotates is related more to the actual speed the car is moving at - so even if you were revving the tits out of the engine in the lower gears the shaft will not nessasarly feel it.

Unless of course you have a very high diff ratio, 10 inch wheels and get it to 9000rpm in 4th! Then you would be going faster than your average mini turbo in 4th!

I'm with hoggy on this one...

The laygear speed is derrived from the engine rpm, the idler gear train ratio, and the gearbox headset ratio...

Take second or third gear for example - I'm assuming that full rpm's are seen in these?

eg
Std A-series
6500rpm
1:1 idler
(at a guess) 1.3:1 headset
hence, the laygear is doing 6500 * (1/1.3) = 5000 rpm.

9000rpm race engine
1:1 idler assumed
(at a guess) 1.3:1 headset
hence, the laygear is doing 9000 * (1/1.3) = 6923 rpm.

oh, I see!

Lay GEAR / Lay SHAFT

Fussy buggers! LOL!

Just because the mini is wierd in that the laygear is supported on a shaft, rather than as in integral unit supported on big bearings like any decent layshaft / laygear cluster should be... *wink*

Now there's an idea, I wonder if it would be possible to modify the casing to allow proper bearings to be used.......

yes typing error laygear was ment.

nice bit of maths there dave.

i also think oil plays a massive part here as well.

as on mine i used coma gold for a few years and showed some nasty layshaft wear on the first gear end ( although it hadnt been out for 4 years, the lay shaft that is lol).

weres t3tone was using millars for some time his lay shaft is about the same age and tha same shaft and was like new plus he has been turbo d for a year longer than me.

may bee somthing in it.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Thats the millers CTV semi synthetic 20W50 with gearbox additive. Not sure if this "gearbox additive" has any real life effect but does seem a very good oil.
