Thanks for the feedback guys.

The G-code is all done (by Sturgeo) so it's time to make some swarf :)

We'll try and make a couple over the weekend and that will prove the CNC and give us an indication of the time required to make them and an idea of the likely cost.

The picture is not showing as the Plusnet server seems to have died.

Tom, but some money in the meter.

Do you mean lube or coolant?

We are only running a slow feed rate at the moment and not doing any plunges more than a mm deep and everything is still cold to the touch.

It does get the occassioinal blast of air though but thats mainly to clear the swarf, we've also put a bit of WD on just to see if it makes any difference and it doesn't :)

It needs something to cool down the cutting tip. We are getting a poor surface finish, particularly towards the end of the cut which suggests heat issues.

I don't want to have to deal with liquid coolant, so we are going to rig up an air blast running off the compressor.

just the odd squirt from a garden sprayer will make all the difference.

Same thing. Coolant is lubricant and lubricant is coolant *wink* you need a constant stream. Air will cool the tool , it won't lubricate it, and the surface finish may still be dull. The tool might still clog up with out the lube.

Was just a thought, and I know where you're coming from not wanting to deal with it as its a whole other complication, and very messy.

Vids don't show some of the problems we are having :(

At the moment everything is about 99% scale. Not sure why but probably a combination of scaling and backlash issues. Sturgeo is fixing it in software at the moment so should not be a problem.

The other issue is the shear amount of time it takes. We don't seem to be able to take big cuts without the machine making a lot of noise and vibration, so we are limited to removing about 1-2cc per minute. So that's typically a 2 by 5mm cut moving at 100mm/min for 1cc per minute.

When you have a block at 270cc and cutting it down to just 63cc, then that's a lot of maching time (and cost).

Now working at 1.0002 scale :)

That'll do nicely.

do you think a refinement in the cutting tool design ,or a bit of lubricant coolant with a guard to stop it splashing all over the place might help with cutting speed ?

The port, pocket for the branch and radiusing the outside now all in one piece of G-Code.

Now we know the materials getting removed in the right places we can look at making it more efficient. A lot of time is spent moving the z axis up to a safe point between each cut, we can easily tell it to go back over itself effectively halving the machining time :)

Have you considered casting something and then just finishing the critical areas? Little furnaces are cheap.. and you can use scrap aluminium then at reduced cost.
