Cheers guys, plan is to clean and tidy everything up, sort the old wiring out, paint it, the drop the new engine in (hopefully) Saturday, won't be at MITP though as I want to get it on a RR before I do loads of miles in it.

So, had the day off work today, so have spent the whole of it working on the car. Managed to make some really good progress though, even if there were a few glitches along the way..

Started the day with the car jacked up on a plank of wood, and the engine down a flight of stairs, in the shed in the garden. Finished a few odd jobs like sticking the speedo housing back on after I had to take it off after forgetting two lock tabs on the layshaft retainer plate *oh well* and fitted the crank pulley and sensor.





Then came the task of trying to get the engine, onto a wheelbarrow in order to get it up from the bottom of the garden, to the front of the drive. After some pretty hairy moments we made it to the front drive, where engine met car for the first time *tongue*





Girlfriend got a bit trigger happy with the camera while we were in the garage..






After faffing about trying to get the 'mirage' manifold to fit, (any way to tell if it's a genuine mirage?) the exhaust manifold was on. Then it was a case of taking the hacksaw to the inlet manifold to get the flanges the same width. First major problem of the day was then realising we had no way of doing any of the manifold nuts up because the inlet manifold obscured them. We did manage it in the end, but I definitely wont be taking it off any time soon...




Then came the business of actually getting the engine in the car, which went okay, and I have to commend minispares on their captive nut engine mounts, which were brilliant, and everything seemed to fit even with a standard engine steady.

Fitting the induction hose for the turbo caused some problems though, as it was getting caught on the tappet breather. It'll do for now, but what have the other 998 guys done with theirs?

And that was all we had time for before it got dark, I only have the photos from when the engine was already in because my girlfriend got bored and went home halfway through *tongue* But when she's uploaded them i'll stick them up here.

Sorry about the essay, didn't realise quite how much we'd done today, and i'm pretty excited to see the new engine in *happy* so here's the pictures I have:











to do list is just to finish the wiring, attach the fuel pump and hoses, then bolt it all back together...

So do you have crankcase/flywheel breathers instead? if it is removed is it necessary to put breathers back on?

I Think It should be alright, i can just knock up an oval adapter for the intake hose and connect another 90 degree to it, and it'll be circular again at the top.

I have on on the rocker box and one on the transfer case. If you really want to use the tappet cover for breathing then modify the breather to get rid of the flame trap. Unless you are breathing into the carb you don't need it.

I would like to see 100 horses, no idea whether I'll get anywhere near that or not.

The main aim of this build was to have a more reliable car, that I can use every day, but that is much more fun, and still less to insure than a standard 1275. I wasn't looking for top end power (sorry for breaking the commandments here, I'll amend this when I get another car/more money..), it's more how it feels to drive that I'm interested in.

Finished my summer job at the end of last week, so have been trying to get as much as I can done while I have the free time, but it always seems to fill up with other stuff..

Anyway, made some fair progress, got some of the engine bay wiring re-done and properly waterproofed in shielding (rather than an inner tyre), got the new wiring for the solenoid and inertia starter motor.



Then had to faf around getting the air feed for the actuator in, which I forgot to do before putting the engine in... Also put the air intake and filter in.



Got the clutch sorted and bled, feels a bit limp on the pedal so I'm not 100% it's working properly, but I have no idea how to check..


Got all the oil feeds sorted, left is turbo, middle is pressure switch, and right is pressure gauge.


Currently struggling to fit the gear change rods, the 'u' shaped part just won't go over the bush on the back of the gearbox? Tried to get a photo but I don't think they'll help..

Ive tried, I couldn't see how to do it without ripping the gear stick box off the car, I tried levering it with a large screwdriver but I have no way of holding the rod so that the force isn't transmitted to the rubber cotton reel mounts?

I was just wondering if there was a special way of doing it that i didn't know about

As apbellamy said or take off the gear change unit open out the fork a bit then put it back on. its only a couple of bolts and a wire to take it off anyways. just a thought there isn't anything pushing the engine right forward is there? in the first pic it looks like the engine needs to be rocked back towards the bulkhead a bit.

Right where do i start!

And it's on standard length engine steadies? One in the normal place and one passenger side gearbox one.

A productive day, got the rad in and gear selector on, got all the electrics sorted so that I could turn it over. Managed to try the clutch but the battery went flat before I could do a compression test.

I found the clutch didn't work though, ie, with my foot on the clutch with the engine in first, on axel stands, the wheels would still turn when I turned the key? I bled the system yesterday, the master cylinder worked before I started and the slave and joining hose are brand new.

When the pedal is pressed the arm does move, but I don't think it moves far enough? Is there a way of ajusting this on a pre verto?

Adjust the clutch using the two nuts on the end of the plunger on the wok. sounds like they need backing off a bit to allow more pedal travel. Don't forget to adjust the return stop on the wok.

Another productive day, got the hubs etc on and then got the wheels on, so it's now sitting on its own accord :)



Finished the wiring for the MJ, just the option switch to plug in.

Fitted the carb, after having to re-tap the jet holder bolt hole, and got all the fuel and pressure hoses connected up.

I didn't do it myself, but I believe it is a Montego plenum, that was sandblasted inside and out, the valve has been blanked off with a welded plate I assume (unles the Montego one didn't have one) and then it looks to have been sprayed.
