This is a really nice car.

Question, does the engine fit under a standard bonnet? if so, how far below the bonnet is the highest point?

I seriously doubt it!

Thanks Paul,

That is an extremely good question. I doubt it would under the standard one, i know the normal KAD bonnets arent raised up as much and have the extra bulge for the timing gear but that extra bulge isnt needed anymore with the short cam version.

I think with the bracing on the bonnet it would be extremely close, so maybe just a normal fibreglass or carbon bonnet would do the job.

I havent got the measurements off hand but i get get a measurement if youd like?

I would appreciate that mate, if you could get a measurement from the block face to the highest point that would be good

I seriously doubt it!

With experience of the K heads, which i know for a fact can and do fit under a standard bonnet with minor mods, the likely point of contact with the bonnet will be the inlet cam sprocket. The exhaust sprocket is miles clear.

I used an old trick that KAD used to use back in the early 90s, whick was to use an automatic subframe and space out the engine mounts enough to lower the engine by around 1/2". You can also tilt the engine back towards the bulkhead a little.

I also used a strip of old door seal along the front edge of the bonnet lip where it meets the slam panel, purely to get the edge line of the bonnet to match the ever varying BMH repro panels. It compressed down nicely with the bonnet straps pulled tight and keeps all that road crap from fouling the filters *happy*

With the K head I also had to modify the cross member slightly as it contacts the cam cover, again near the inlet cam sprocket, but looking at the KAD cover, its nice and low, so doubt the cross member will be an issue.

any other mods to the slam panel and bonnet leading edge will be down to the type of induction used.

In all I managed roughly a 5mm clearnce between bonnet and inlet cam sprocket.

all that said, I'm not sure on the difference in height of cams between the two heads.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Ah, just measured the height from the block to the top of the cam sprockets on the K head with a 38 tooth sprocket, and I get 19cm, and if the 36 tooth sprockets were used instead, like the KAD ones, it'll be a bit less.

That, along with the ~12mm by using the auto frame, there is nearly ~25mm in it, which is a fair old chunk.

Maybe its not so easy to get the standard bonnet to fit with a KAD head as i originally thought :(

Since after suspecting that the synchro is knackered on 2nd the engine will be coming back out the car soon.

The car currently has a 3.2 diff in it and im looking at maybe a 3.4, has anyone got any reccommendations on what to go for? Im looking at doing some sprints and quarter mile times next year would 3.6 be too much

Right ive brought a high torque starter motor. Should help with turning the engine over quicker.

Not touching it now till after christmas, also got a few more ideas on saving weight with carbon, nothing special though.

This is spot on, love it. Don't change the wheel colour it makes a nice change to see the grey with red. What's it like with putting power down on 10s? Also saw this on minimags preview and thought how good it looks then I see it on here! What are the seats like?comfy? Where'd they come from?

i got nothing but time..

Its alright at putting the power down, obviously it spins the wheels up no end in 1st and a bit in 2nd. Its on a 3.2 diff though. Im sure itll be a lot worse when i put a 3.6 in.

Wouldnt put the kirkeys in again, not that comfy, not that cheap and id prefer a nice cobra bucket.

Currently wrestling with driveshafts trying not be be defeated, not a simple tap as id of like though. Most of the ancillaries are off the engine now so its just two mounts to take off and it should be out.

On a brighter note this has been made up for me, should be here this week.

There is a special tool, but I've never failed with a tyre leaver and a hammer.

Having said that, there was a batch of rogue pot joints sold by minispares last year that are actually impossible to get off. If you have some of these, you'll have to split them at the rubber joint.

If you do have these then you need to contact the supplier.

pot joints or hardy spicer?

if pot joints, remove the boot from the cup, lift the engine a little the move the engine to one side, the shaft and the inner part will eventualy drop free, move the engine to the other side, drop the other shaft free and away you go.

if you have a certain type of pot joint (Usually identifiable by the phosphated finish and the laser etched part numbers). Th spring clip grooves machined incorrectly, resulting it them being practically impossible to remove from the diff output shafts while the diff is still on the gearbox.

I brought them mid last year! From Min-its but they all seem to have the same supplier.

There pot joints not hardy spicer, weve managed to get one out with a homemade tool that looks just like the special tool, with a severe amount of wacking.

Going to look at making a more substantial tool tomorrow.

Thanks for all the info, its good to know about that bad batch as well.
