Not sure which set, but I **believe** they where ST ratios. You will need to count the teeth on the gears to be sure.

It's S/C Brett. It's the van's old box.

It's first that's straight cut Brett. 4th is helical.

what do you guys think just bearing failure?

Probably initially, yes.

But there are a couple of things to consider,

1 - Was the transfer case originally matched with that gearbox casing ? Like the diff housing, the transfer case and gearbox casing are supposed to be a matched pair, never usually a problem if you mix them but may have been in this case.

2 - Was the bearing new and, if so, were all three parts fitted ? I've seen this before on a 998 assembled lump I bought a few years ago, people buy the new bearing, realise the outer race is very difficult to get out of the transfer housing, it looks OK, so just fit the new inner race and rollers to the 1st motion shaft. But the different manufacturers of the bearings use different size rollers - only the major OD and major ID has to be what Leyland/Rover wanted, the minor OD/ID and roller diameters can be whatever the bearing manufacturer decided on. So if you don't use all three parts, the bearing may be too tight or too loose. Either will lead to failure.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

The box and transfer case where originally from the upside down skip and where not a matched pair, both of unknown origin. We replaced the race when we built the box. It had all new bearings throughout.

so bit of a update after mr bellamy helping kindly with the gearbox repairs I was fedup with wrestling the engine in and out on my own so decided to buy my self a engine crane and it took forever for a local one to turn up on the bay but when it did I went from this

to building this

and a little move around

have to say loads easier on your own. now my only problem is I managed to loose the turbo oil drain hose as I was fitting it, it shot off and I cant for the life of me find it aaggghh

Done now needs redoing lol
