spent the morning on the bridgeport, opening the stud holes on the head to 12mm, so i no longer have to hit it with a hammer :icon_biggrin:, however what appeared to be a logical way :idea1: of firstly lining up the head to the block by using locating dowels did not work, they were some way off :crybaby2:, this was done on the cnc machine, everything was dialed up, so i can only sumise that despite having the stud holes drilled and tapped on a cnc machine this still was not accurate due to drilling and tapping into drifferent types of material :icon_thumright:. I am just concerned about the cam belt slipping due the head not been true of even moving.
i suspect as Colin states the ideal is to drill and tap into the same material rather than softer and harder as the drill and tap will naturally move to the softer side :icon_thumleft:. I suspect the is the only way to be sure is to re drill the stud holes on the block using bigger blanking studs, that way i will be able to drill and tap into the same material, therefore avoiding any movement in the drill and tap. :laughing7:
However someone has suggested putting a small sleeve in the bolt holes on the head to stop any movement :icon_scratch:, something like this http://www.engineersedge.com/roll_pin.htm, that said I have 10 studs each with around 45lb = 450lb spread over the head, therefore it should not go any where. :icon_silent:

Looking good. Where did you get the peening done? And how much?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I was in two minds about having it done, but if the cost is that low...

Had the block and head back, with two keyways inserted in the bloc and matched to the head, with the intention of stopping any twist in the head, thus avoiding the belt to slip off.

For me this has been a learning curve, in that the only way to avoid any slipping when drilling and tapping for the head studs would have been to put bigger plugs in and drill and tap into these, thus avoiding any drill and tap slippage and the only way in my view is to have access to a cnc machine

Head has had its final skim today

Pistons are in for the dummy build, mark the pistons for cutting

Head gasket and head on for the first time.

Very slow progress now as I have not been able to get to the machine shop, but I have done a dummy build for the cuts in the pistons and have made a jig

Correct me if I am wrong but the valves are at 70 degrees?

Depends on what plain you are measuring it from.

Actual valve angle is an included angle of 19.5 and 20.5 degrees, but for the sake of simplicity 20 degrees is perfectly fine

Do you need the cut outs for the oil jets? Not seen anybody else doing that before. Has it put the pistons out of balance?

EDIT: Made my question more clear...

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

My mate Mike did it to his pistons, so even if the cambelt snapped there would be no contact.

I think Andy is on about the cut-outs for the oil jets.

I've seen posts on here where people have had to file pisons for the jets.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

i found the bottom of the pistons were coming into contact with the jets, so it was suggested that i do the cuts. perhaps there is an argumentto suggest i did not need to cut out so much.
in respect of the balance this is something that i am checking next.

You could always take the same notch out but on the opposing side8-)

Thats not a bad idea actually. Unless it could affect the piston strenth in anyway?

I don't know why a piston would need to be balanced. It does not rotate, just goes up and down.

In 998s the gudgeon pin is not even central, so what would you balance?

Looking good though.
