You should see the welding machine we use off shore to weld x65 36" pipe " saturmax 9's " by seri max ! *smiley*

The offshore stuff is impressive, I'm not that familiar with it, I assume it's automated MIG as the pipes are usually carbon or low alloy steel.
In my industry, which is mostly stainless, I've seen a couple of the proprietry Westinghouse automated TIG (auto wire feed but still TIG process) machines working on reactor primary coolant pipework (also 30" plus but stainless and much thicker) and a smaller auto TIG UK machine on 14" thickwall stainless. For a whole variety of reasons, in my industry, we don't allow MIG (auto or manual) on high integrity piping but, for home fabrication, I find nothing wrong with it even on stainless.

BTW, the car(s) look superb.

Hey Rod

This the pipelay boat ( seven borealis ) I was the pipelay lead engineer on for the pipeline project in Mexico, basically laying 8km of 36" carbon steel pipeline in 100m water depth for transportation of hydro carbons between oil rigs ( oil to you and me ! )

Looks small in the photo but is over 200m long including stinger ( white stern structure on stern ) and 46m wide it is the pride of our global fleet of 42 vessels

Stern crane has 3 hooks... Whip line at tip 110te including DAF at 90m radius, aux hook 400 te , main hooks 5000te, one hell of an engine hoist!!

Basically we take 12m lengths of pipe from a barge and weld them end to end to make the pipeline, with full ndt and meet a 20 year design life criteria whilst transporting severely caustic product, and maintaining sufficient u value to prevent hydrate formation at ambient subsea temperatures. Admittedly this is far beyond anything I ever imagined myself doing but feel proud of what we achieved in the time.

Not saying how much she costs a day but not much change from 1m....no pressure to make sure you have ordered / procured designed and developed to industry standard and have in country / shipped offshore all the hardware and equipment you need to make it happen....for an 18 day campaign

Project planning phase was on fast track basis 4 months pipe mill to seabed, basically the last 8 weeks I and my team of 7 did 12hr days every day for the last 8 weeks, 4 weeks in Houston, 2 weeks in Mexico and 3 weeks on board

Not to mention that the client required all deliverable documents in Spanish and we had to translate incoming documents also

Machos gracias !!

Wife didn't want to move to Texas, or I'd have been there several years ago *Yes*

BTW Brox, Graeme sent me some pics of his xe mini last night - as he's just past 40, he's put carpet and door cards back inside and finally replaced the wiring loom.... Never thought that would happen.

hey gents,

finally got around to the quick shift in car conversion, went for the cheaper option, bought UJs for 10 pounds and rod for a fiver, tapped them and threaded the rod, bought some nuts and got the brackets from KAD,

Main reason was that the shifter was getting stiff due to heat soak from the 2" exhaust pipe right next to the remote in the tunnel and that first gear was a bit of a stretch with the harnesses tight, coupled with lowered steering column and lowered / seat moved back...

Feels sweet, took a little trial and error to get the rotation corrected on the gate, but found the sweet spot now.

Word of warning, the rod goes through the floor a little more to the left than you first think...not central...any how hope you like the pics,

cheers

Wow,

just seen this...no offense but was a little pre-occupied at the time....the water came half way up the drive...funny though, I had the car jack in the house putting the solid oak side board, table and cabinets on bricks before I got the mini jacked up ....brownie points I guess...

Also just realized, looks like I never posted the front end light weight upgrade that was done in Feb 2017....Alloy coil overs, Ti arms to suit, and custom Force racing alloy top brackets. Nice job Carl.

Wow, 2020 already...little update on the master plan. Inspired by a few wide body conversions recently, and brought some 13" x 10s back from the UK on my way back from being the best man at my good friends wedding.

I have always fancied doing a Miguire front end since seeing one in one of the early mini tuning books, hopefully I can pull this off this time.
Thinking the shell is pretty well modified so no issues with not keeping it standard....will keep you posted...may have to "raise the floor" i.e. cut out the floor from the sils down to get the right stance ?
Ideas welcome!

I think the maguire minis are usually space framed, could do a semi spaceframe.

That's what I was thinking initially, basically welding up a full roll cage,

But would be cheaper to convert mine if you know what I mean

Nice one DAVE, sounds like I need to ship back a 10ft container, Singapore air lines let me ship the wheels as my second case. Had to pull the valve stems so they would not pressurize, but since they were under the weight limit we were good ! I had taped them together so dims wise it was a big suit case !!!
