I did Combe and back and loved them, very comfy no back ache or anything. I did think long and hard about yours but it would have meant an interior colour change, so I waited and snapped these up cheap!

These remote boxes are a bit of a pain for spares by the looks of things, like gear sets unless you go sc.

I would like to keep the original look. Will have to wait and see..

Well everything is moving on a bit. I would post a pic but iPads are shite.
Anyway, the block, crank and head are with the machinist.

This was the first thing I struggled with was finding somewhere, this guy was recommended by my rolling road operator as an a-series specialist, he looks after a load of the local grassers. Anyway turning up he had a couple of a-series blocks inc a nice 1071.

So he had a look at the crank and block and we agreed on the following:

Crank Regrind
Block rebore to +080 as I wanted a 1060
Head crack tested

The next problem was pistons, they are hard to get a good set at the mo. Did some searching on here and pm'd Wil the resident tm small bore specialist.
The issue is finding something "good" with a dish so that I could get my cr back to a reasonable level.
The choices were hepolite +060 with a dish in or the graham Russell range from calver st.
I had a chat over ausmini about the cr and if I could get a dish in them. GR recond I could user them upto 10:1 with 12 psi. I'm still not a believer I don't know why as I know dick about engine building this being my first.
Anyway I didn't like the hepolite being a slipper pistons and Wil's experiences so I have ordered the gr set and been I touch with senior Austin about getting a dish sorted.
Anyway engough of my rambling, suffice to say 1/2 the problem for a novice so far is finding the people, part and then finance to start these things...

Next time we should get some pics of shiny bits.....

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I've gone for around 8.3:1 or 8.4:1 on mine (allowing for my measurement 'tolerances').

I don't think 10:1 with a supercharger will be any good at all as you get plenty of boost from low in the rev range.

He said the same to John when we where looking at 1100 pistons for a friend, personally I would not go anywhere near 9:1, never mind 10:1.

Agreed I currently run 8.7:1 ands it's been fine.

Hes did agree to pay for new pistonsif they melted :) I'm guessing his testing was with the sprintex kit but I never got a further answer.

Either way I will see how much Carl can dish into them.

Well I stripped one of the spare box's that I have today. That was an education and a pain as everything was glued together because of the lack of oil changes. This is my first gearbox strip down...

I have taken some pics of the gears I presume that the dogs are knackered? Also the coating on some of the gears has almost worn off...
Now the other spare box I have I know crunched in every gear, as I drove t for a very short period of time.
So I guess that I'm into a new SCCR gearset, or buying a box that's bee prebuilt. either way its going to hurt the pocket. Rough numbers I have been working to:

Gearset - 450
4 pin -150
rebuild bearings, shafts, gaskets, bulk rings, etc - 150 (using the MS rebuild kit as a guide price)

Someone to build the above inc parts circa - £1K
The other options are finding a used set or A+ and having it stuffed into my case.

So whets the general opinion?

opps... Tried to move the syncro with one hand, whilst using the cam and fired the balls everywhere..

I have loads of A+ boxes in bits if you want gears. All those are well and truly fucked.

Yep just what I thaught.. the next gear to come off had some of the dg chipped off...

Just need to think if I want to spend the £££ or try a rebuild...

Reverse looks a bit rounded off, and I think thats the remote box specific??

Ok I have the bits back from the machine shop. So I'm starting to think about the rebuild.

Where does everyone stand on:

1) Lock tabs on the rods and main caps. (pre A+)
2) lock tabs else where on the engine.

Thanks all

For the rods:

I don't bother with the lock tabs in the transfer case etc. they didn't have them on A+ engines

Wow, over here those gears would still be totally useable, bar the one with the missing dog. I suppose that the last mini to be built here are now almost 30 years old so finding good stuff is really hard.

Well I have found a serviceable box well it looks like it. The dogs all look good and looks it better condition. So will need to strip that and rebuild.

All this spanner work and getting no where is a pain but, then you don't want to drop them in the car and it not work.

Well I have some decisions to make:

1) Pistons which are with Senior F.Carl. Getting a dish in them with a usable thickness left in the crown, and a decent CR is going to be a balancing act. I need to measure my head as I cant remember the CC. making m think I should have this written down somewhere.

2) I need to strip a new gearbox that I have picked up, the condition looks much better than the other two I have. I can then make a list of bits to build one up. All new and exciting.

I have purchased an engine stand as it seems it will be very worth it, in the long run.

oh and some light reading with Des Hammill's 4- cylinder engine short block high performance manual.

I have been looking for cam's and doing some reading on here and all over the internet. I currently use a 266 in the 998 and would like something with a bit more balls, the car is only used for fun.

The usual crowd seem to pop up:

a) Graham Russell RE83T
b) Kent's 274
c) The US VP supercharged cam which seems very very expensive.
d) VMAX cam that doesn't appear to be available anymore, but I need to ring him Monday.

The reading seems to push towards a wide LCA of +110 nice to have 112 The yank tanks use 112 and above.
Overlap seems to be controversial some say its better with none, some say some is a good thing to help cylinder purging.
Also there is a lot about a low duration the VP cams seems to support this, however is contravened in the yellow book, which also states that a low LCA is also good P.361 second column.

With this in mind what do people think of the 544.

Cam Lift(mm)
7.99mm Inlet/Exhaust

Valve Lift(mm)
9.82mm Inlet/Exhaust

Duration
274 Deg Inlet/Exhaust

Timing
27/67 67/27

Full Lift
Inlet 110 Deg ATDC

Or The 643

Applications Fast Road - Rally
Power Band 2500-7500
Cam Lift(mm) 7.99mm Inlet/Exhaust
Valve Lift(mm) 9.82mm Inlet/Exhaust
Duration 274 Deg Inlet/Exhaust
Timing 27/67 67/27
Full Lift Inlet 110 Deg ATDC
VC (mm) 0.40mm Inlet/Exhaust
LTDC 1.85mm Inlet

Anyway going to do a little spanner work tomorrow, once I find my bobble hat :)

right what I have stripped the new gearbox that I have got, this is in much better condition and looks like it has been recently rebuilt with new bearings and bulk rings.
Whilst the bulk rings fit and have a good gap some of the gears look like the coating is worn and very thin.

So is this scrap?
