Good call Ben :)
On the upside...managed to get 2 wheels, bonnet, slam panel and a wing the weekend. Did some behind the scenes ebay haggling. *happy*

Its only like drawing a 2D engineering drawing, but electronically....not fun but pays the bills. You want to get into 3D with all the clever photo rendering...alas I've never done it

Pulled the car out today and cleared all the crap out of it.
After a good inspection, not much welding required. Its rotten around the sunroof aperture, which isn't a problem as I'm replacing the roof. Door pillar, rear turrets need some TLC. Other than that, shes a sturdy old girl.
Got a nice sheet metal supply, welder, box bender, compressor (mini13) & spray gun. After another behind the door ebay deal, got a roof. Not sure the plan of attack in replacing it though. Cut it at the posts or replace the skin.

Quite gutted, the metro the roof came from was mint! Just got there as the bloke was cutting it off! :(

I would replace the skin, cutting the posts won't leave much strength and it will take a lot of effort and measuring to get a perfect fit. I just finished cutting the roof skin of my mini *happy*

I didn't realise that there's was a sun roof aperture, I always though your car was an ex-challenge car like JF's.

Trouble is drilling all the spot welds on the gutter. I think the centre & rear posts are single skinned, just the front pillars are double skinned. Also got the cage to tie it all in.

Just grind away the excess metal under the gutters etc, thin the old bit where the spot welds are and peal the old metal away with plyers. There's no way I'm drilling 200+ welds out of my shell....

Under the gutters is the part I want to keep on the car...I understand your point on the doner roof though.

Rob...think they are just a shell change with all the challenge parts. Having one with a sunroof is a pain...
1. its extra weight with the reinforcement lip & steel where the sunroof was.
2. You lose 1 1/2" of head room.

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a lot of rout under the skin aswell. The sunroof drains get blocked and everything rots out...

Was thinking of cutting the pillars. Basically, pull the windows out and making some templates to get it all spot on. Its got a cage, so no worries of the car folding in half. lol
Where I cut and join new roof, tie those areas in with the cage.

Well,

i reckon getting the roof off the racer shouldn't be too bad, although probably slow going... grind and peel as mentioned.

I think getting the doner roof off will probably prove more tricky though.

What's your thoughts on getting neat welds on the new skin Jason?

I really don't like the idea of welding (puddle welds) the roof skin along the gutter. No room to grind it after either. Then still got the problem of joining it to the rear pillar. Distortion could be a major worry. Front is easier as theres a join.

I was thinking spot welder could be an option.

Just had a good look at the blue roof.
I'm going to take everyones advice, re-skin only.
Spot welding would be best.
