Sorry to hear that mate, thanks for showing use the great pictures of the massive damage.

I'm surprised it lasted you this long mate after seeing how good your car was at Avon!

I hope you sort it soon.

thanks matt ,appreciate the compliment!

How many miles of abuse did it all hold together for?

Has anyone else damaged a gear box quite as badly as this? I think the laygear ought to be mounted on a marble plinth on the mantle piece.

I hope nothing else has been damaged.

um , it was a 84k turbo engine i got in 97 built it with 114 bhp and it did about 20 k , then rebuilt it in 03 with 120 then 3k miles .. 150 bhp this year and did about 400 miles !!lol
i think the fact that it stoped dead has saved the engine but ill have a look at it anyway ,may need a new oil pump.

great pictures m8. Another one to put down to experience. Quick work with stripping the gearbox.

Why would the drops cause the problem ?

I stripped about 3 or 4 input shafts before going straight cut. Due to noise, I never opted for SC drops, and never had any issues with them.

And probably stupidly....every time I stripped the teeth.....4th gear alwys got me home lol.
I was fortunate the debris never damaged elsewhere too badly.

seriously though, you've been to minits have'nt you wink wink!

i'm about to start stripping my gearbox this week, i'm feeling brave so bugger it, i'll have go!

what you have there looks gr8, good old collection of parts to make what you have even better, should help the 1/4 mile times too i'd have thought as str8-cuts transmit more power to the wheels dont they! nice work robert!

Of the three boxes I stripped to build up the one for the 16valver, I found two of the input shaft main bearings with considerable wiggle in them. Once i had selected the parts and re built it with complete new bearings including the turbo input support bearing at 40 smackers!! the wiggle was gone.

Im a little unclear on the mileage on the box, are you saying you rebuilt the box with all new parts and it lasted 400miles?

Did you use the turbo input suport bearing?

LOL, I was waiting for the standard 80k diff i was originaly using on the 1400 to go pop with 87lbft. Good job i changed it out now its giving 101lbft

Destruction is exciting, if you can bear the cost.

PS: plenty of shiney teeth in that first piccie above*tongue*

Its all very well making a list of stuff you need to buy. The problem comes when you arrive at the shop and realise you forgot the list like I did today!

Ah coolio, you were expecting in the back of your mind really then. Id put the money on the input shaft main bearing having some slop in it, giving less contact on the laygear as they push apart under load.

Just my 2 pence worth*wink*

edit that, its not a lot of miles but still would have rebuilt it, oopsie, its a fair chunk of torque.

But ooh lookie some spangley new straight cut gears, at least something good has come from it *tongue*

""a charming model with my shaft !"" Would she have agreed to the photgraph if she'd known about the pun?

it's photos like this that put me off rebuilding a gearbox. Should be good when it's done the ratios are SO MUCH better.
