i think what paul is saying is that swifty is bullshitting alledgedly, as if hes told Paul he " beleives" it suggests he has ne test data to prove otherwise,

I probably wouldnt say bullshitting, he does have the knowledge and the dyno to test it, and he is putting one in his own new historic racer. But for 1/4 mile which as everyone knows is all Im interested in, I dont believe its the way to go.
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Just got my new crank for 998 project.
What do you think?
Anyone care to guess who made it?

no idea bit the 3rd and 4th big-end bearigns from the sprocket end are proper fucked and the 1st has heat marks

I didn't say it was new and a 10 thou grind should fix it.
Seriously, I put the picture up to show the counterbalance weights.
It's from a ferrari F1 engine revving to god knows what and I thought it might be relevant.

Dave

Theres some chap's experimenting with heavy metaling rover k-series cranks, didnt look to much into it as astronomical rev's and no torque isnt really my thing, but an interestign subject one the less!

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Carl, i know what you mean. Have you seen the Slap Head cranks?
He takes off all the counterbalance as you say, Baldwin swears its great. Selby also does this and Dick and Max Hunter say theyre great. They end up looking like a bent up piece of wire.
If my car wasnt used on the road Id give it a go as longevity wouldnt be such an issue. If I were you or John Haston, I definately would do it.

There is one of Slapheads cranks in the workshop, as you say paul, no counterbalance at all! They do the job though!

I cannot understand how he dares to remove som much material form the area around the big end. Wouldn't oil pressure drop?

Front running 7s run minimal pressure, according to Max Hunter around 15psi. But I cant see that the vrank would cause low pressure as the oil is still compressed by the bearing itself. In theory it shouldnt need that extra metal around the big end, removing it does help with counter balance.

well i'll drag this one back up.

all this talk of the counterbalance less cranks got my old matter going, it has been sat there in the back of my mind for years ,ever since i read about Eslinger engineering in the USA running a form of balanceless crank in there sandrail dragster pinto engines, although i couldn't find a pic at the time i always thought if they can why cannot us A series users,
i was just to cautious to take the plung, but seing as others have it seems they migh be a goer,
so ive had a go,

it just needs a gring now, i'm debating whether to backdrill, they take so long to modify by the time comes to backdrill i'm sick of working on them.
i'm off to get some piccies.

just weighed it at 9.54 kg

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
