I just use my mig to tack it all in place then tig it all up. tig is the only thing to use on stainless it just looks so neat and you know you have a good strong weld. get it rite and it dont look like bird s**t. take your time dont try and rush welding. Preperation is the key. practice makes perfect. wen welding any less than 1.5mm plate weld in 1 inch or so stints. and weld it in different areas not just one end to the other. for example a seam weld 6 inches long break it up into 4 sections and do one end cool it with a bit of gass then move to the other end. this will stop distortion. home made stainless exhaust pop, bang flames. nice. bert motorsport. win it or bin it! |

What visor shade are we using,I got a 12 today(stevie wonder) then found my old one was a 8 ! thinking about a 6 for the thinnish low power stuff A good point. Using the shade supplied with the mask meant that by the time I could actually see the job there was too much heat in it and it would melt away, leaving huge holes! I tried a lighter shade and my MIG welding improved dramatically. Once I was there, I could turn up the power without blowing holes (ok, not as often!) If you're plug-welding to create spot-type welds, on a 130-ish turn the wire up to about 7 and the power to 2 high or 3 low and work fast from one side to the other until there's no more hole. Another thing - if it's a new skill, so try to learn it with your other hand too, means that you don't have to be double jointed to get to some places. Also, I always wear earplugs - it's not the pain from the weld spatter that I'm afraid of, it's the spatter not having cooled down enough by the time it reaches your eardrum. If it's hot enough, it'll sear right through and cauterize as it goes, meaning that your eardrum will never recover, nor will the hearing in that ear. Good luck! |

Set a wire speed that suits to your confidence. Dont have it too fast to begin with as you want a nice peneterive weld. Clean the area thourghly and just be careful not to set fire to anything. Youll be fine trust me I learnt in like a day! when i drove a 10" wheeled Mini last it felt insane ! |

My advice as a noob to welding would be just take it slow- do a small amount at a time, then stop and inspect it. Even better try to get the welder set up to the correct settings on a piece of scrap the same thickness as the real one... though I'm always too impatient for that!
There is no sense crying over every mistake- you just keep on trying til you run out of cake. |

Use Co2 & argon (coogar problably the best) for mildsteel, and helium/argon (helishield if memory serves) for stainless. You should have a nice chrisp sound when you got wire/amps right.

One thing that has not so far been mentioned is to cover up all exposed skin - not just to avoid a rash of welders freckles but the U/v light can cause skin cancers.Dont ask me how I know this. |

If you have to use "gasless mig" (flux cored wire) then cooking spray works just as well as any commercial welding anti-spatter products. On 24th Dec, 2008 Nic said:

i hated .6mm but then again i liked my settings for 0.8 and back then wasnt too sure on what to change (wire speed/power) for the symptons if you get what i mean? just seemed to blow the wire out not giving a decent weld, even on a variety of settings. i may give it another try when iget the new welder but i likes me 0.8mm. |

2 brilliant forums that I can spend all night reading…tons of stuff for new welders, especially if you are looking to make headers…they are basically the same just different crowds:

I hate them reaction lenses. Try welding outside on a sunny day. First you can see, then a ray of sun catches it and it darkens. Use an en8 Lens. This is a light shaded lens. you can just about see through it without striking up. they are excellent up to around 160amps. I look through one of these all day. I'm a tig welder ya see. |
