Haha hungry hippos... yes I remember that lol... The arches... yes they will have to be cut but the car needs to be weighted up with the lump and other bits to set the correct ride height so yes not ideal but thats the way it has to be...

So started stripping down the carb this morning to give it an overhaul with one of the 'SU' rebuild kits... Absolutely caked in shite...

Opened up the float chamber first (as instructed in the carb rebuild guide put together by Tom... Thanks, very handy!!) and it was plain to see it was well overdue... note the dust and other crap that fell out...

Started cleaning it up once I had removed the other bits with some carb cleaner that I got from toolstation. Came out reasonably ok but not as new looking as I'd have liked it so decided to give some petrol a go. This worked very well in fairness so the rest of it is having a paddle right now in a bath of the stuff, should come out rather nice when its done.

In the photo below of the inlet manifold, have a look at the two ends of the pipe that the water hoses clamp on to, you'll see that they are pretty corroded and not very nice looking. Structurally they are sound, do you think they would be ok with a good brush from a wire brush (somehow doing the inside too) or does it need replacing?

Can someone remind me also where those hoses that clamp to it go? It was so long ago when I pulled out the engine I've forgotten, tried looking back through some old photos but can't see... cheers.

Ok Dave cheers... so just a hot rush of water through... simples!

I was on call today with work today so took the opportunity to get busy in the garden and enjoy the sunshine! Thankfully I wasn't called...

Started cleaning up the fan housing for the radiator and engine bracket... from this...

To this...

I'll paint them silver tomorrow before work... also did a bit more on the carb, starting to look quite clean....

Got it all rebuilt up again, not as clean on the outside as I'd like but the inside is spotless...

And then a knock at the door... and this is the star of the show, what this forum is all about... brace yourselves....!!!!!

It's brand new again! Looks pretty awesome I must say, a job well done by 'Turbo Technics'!

Engine is hopefully going in this weekend if my brother in law turns up with his crane... been ordering plenty of bits in the meantime... silicone pipes, oil cooler, radiator and a few more bits and bobs. Got a manky alternator and starter motor in the garage that need a good clean up, both caked in shite but all in working order...

This project is starting to rule my life *Yes*

Looks real good! Yeah i believe just to warm up manifold in colder weather... but thats back in the day when they were just cars... not toys that only come out in warmer weather anyway

So finally my hungry hippo got it's first meal today... engine time! Got busy today installing, abandoned the wife and locked myself in my cave...

Should have taken a better picture but there was only an inch to spare between the subframe and the slam panel with the flip in the open position once the engine was hoisted up... Could have modded the chain I know but it was pretty tight without..

Got radiator, fan and cowling put in... ignore the manky old bracket.. just a temporary measure...

Taking shape....

Inlet, outlet and turbo are ready to go on but foolishly forgot about the gaskets so trying to get my hands on a set asap.. got a few other bits to be getting on with anyway. Realised I never received the pipe from turbo to plenum back with it after its refurb so gonna have to chase that up too. Anyway, it's starting to look like a motor now so happy days!

Thanks chaps.... slowly getting there.

Not a huge update but spent all of yesterday out there again getting quite a few of the fittings back in... started with the quick shift gear selector...

Got both door windows in, door cards and all fittings. Cleaned up the windows and discovered they are both fairly scratched...

Both back doors are back on, quite a fiddly job.. very hard to get gaps all round the same. Need to order new rubbers all round for doors and windows. Rear lights back on but the gaskets are perished so they'll be off again. Started loads of jobs yesterday but was halted on most of them as I was short a part here and there... better get ordering again!

Haa... no not wasting any time, any spare moment I have now I'm on the tinterweb sourcing bits. Bank balance is withering away slowly. Got so many jobs to do though.. and still loads to buy! All going well (and if I keep at it the way I'm going) I'm hoping to have it up and running in approx a months time, then I'll get it all tuned up on a rolling road somewhere. It also has to go back to the spray shop for arches to be stuck on and detailing after that.

Then yes, I'll be at every show I'm able to get to... thats the part I'm looking forward to... the end is nigh!

Got these little beauties dropped off the other day, won them on ebay...

Wasn't sure about the 'comfy factor' but I'm proper happy with these, seem comfortable enough and got them at a very good price... will look something like this...

Also received these gaskets for the turbo in the post today free of charge from Andy, I'll bung a few quid in the server fund this evening... cheers!

Started cleaning up the starter motor also, too much money to buy a new one for the sake of looking shiny. Sprayed black, drying at the mo....

The missus is working late tonight so took advantage of the 'parts cleaner' in the kitchen... dishwasher full of light lenses, bowls, grill bits and so on.... jeez she'd have a baby if she knew!

Ya I think so too Dave.

So went out there this morning to get the turbo slapped on but was hampered on a few items... firstly noticed missing another small elbow that connects to the block via a silicone hose... the one underneath when looking down at the turbo. Also, two of the studs are too short that join the elbow to the turbo, the elbow that connects to the exhaust down pipe. So stopped in my tracks there straight away, the elbow can't be put on in situ... back on the phone to them!

Bolted the starter motor on after putting it back together...

Started putting on the new rubbers for the doors all round, door cards and bits had to come off again to get the rubbers in the door frames in.. pain in the arse!

The last guy had that tinted shit on the windows so took a while to clean up them up... new rubbers in there too...

Chaps, I meant to ask before... this extension that was on my float chamber...

Is it something I need on there? When I rebuilt the carb the new screws provided weren't long enough to allow this to be put back on. I've left it off for the moment (can go back on) but dunno if its needed.. Any ideas??

Got busy with the oil cooler earlier.. found the best place to mount was on the front of the subframe... Ignore the shitty alternator, was going to have the oil cooler higher up so had it in there for checking clearances... will be getting a nice shiny new one..

Made my own brackets up...

And the front just clears it by a couple of millimetres as it opens and closes... Nicely in the air flow..

Leaving plenty of room higher up behind the grille for an intercooler...

Another job out the way!

The elbow is facing the wrong way? If you rotate it so the outlet points down when the manifold is mounted it looks like the long stud would line up with the deep hole?

Ah your talking about the turbo elbow.. yes I know, I only had it offered up like that to show the studs were too short. No matter which way I rotate it, two of them are too short as the studs are all the same length.

I was a bit confused for a couple of mins because I thought you were talking about the oil cooler. I was thinking "where the fook is the elbow??", I had to re-read your post and then saw you mentioned the manifold lol...

I see, can they not just post you out some studs the right size? Or just buy some high quality ones from somewhere. Would be my suggestion.

Build looks fantastic though; and looks like it's going well other than the setbacks!
