This is the one we got eventually:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=57922

Originally ordered the Team Sky HydroMag from Wiggle but they let us down.

I've only used it once as we have been able to get out on the bikes most weeks. Seems fine, no load adjustment but you can use the gears for that.

Been riding the chicsands bike park recently, get about 4hrs in before the legs begin to give out. Had a massive crash yesterday, thank the lord for the full face and body armour. Still, got a pocket full of codine and my left hand is in a brace. One of the biggest offs I have ever had got of lightly!

Anyone on here use heart rate monitors and training zones?

I bought one a few weeks ago because I started getting chest pains after a hard session. Now riding a lot slower to stay safe :(

Try hyper ventilation when your next out. I found I was running out of energy and my heart was pounding, I don't know how fast but it was beating hard.

After concentrating on what I was doing during the ride I realised my breathing was the issue. Basically I started riding with my usual high cadence but with a high breathing rate near on two breaths a second. The up shot is I am now able to average 20mph for the first hour but I lose a little in the last 5 miles and end with a trip average of 19.8 mph over a 25 mile ride. That seems to be my plateau. Bearing in mind I'm in my 40's my heart rate hits 122 and stays there.

122bpm... what are you? a gorilla :)

Stage 2 complete, rear wheel and disc brake fitted:

The discs are quite fancy, stainless steel/aluminium sandwich *surprised*

Next job is to do the rest of the drivetrain, shifters and bottom bracket. I don't want to run it as it is because I think the new cassette and old chain causing may cause issues.

ally discs?! its not an elise!

shifting shouldn't be an issue unless the chain is fucked, aybe whack the new chain on and try it.... or just swap it all in one go....

you swapping the rear mech? that'll probably be the worst to set up, although they are pretty easy after you've done a couple.

I'm looking at getting a trainer too, I want to try to get one with a known resistance so I can get an idea of my power output and how much its changing.

Changing both mechs and the crankset. I'm familiar with the setup, but it's been a few years.

I'm sure a clever electronics chap like you could devise a simple power meter using a strain gauge and cadence sensor.

Upgrade complete. Also fitted all the parts I took off onto an old Saracen frame that we had hanging around so now the youngest can keep up with me:

Now it's only 2 Deg C outside so I will have to wait a bit before we can try them.

Just saw the road bike I will be purchasing hopefully in the near future Treck Domaine 5.2 or I might stretch to the six series. Shimano Di2 shifters accept no substitutes.

Excellent choice. Built for us older guys who want a bit of comfort over the longer distances.

If, and when, I lose another couple of stone then I'll be upgrading to a full carbon bike and my current favourites are the Domane and the Specialized Roubaix.

The two will be going head to head this year in Paris-Roubaix with Cancellara and Boonen on board. Real clash of the titans.

I'll leave the Di2 to the pro though and stick with manual shifting.

My brother is looking to road test the two back to back in the states both fitted with the ultegra Di2. I'll purest up his views as it will be the clincher for me. There was a back to back ready in a magazine recently and the Domane won out over the Roubaix.

Result. What a years end to sports to secure the start of the Tour de France.

Bought my brother a road bike, after testing multiple Trek Domane and Specialized Roubaix, he picked the2011 Roubaix with dura ace and Roval fussee wheels, carbon bars and carbon seat post. looks the nuts!

Well I had a few pennies spare so I got myself a trainer as a crimble treat....

ended up going along the same lines as paul with an elite, wiggle had them on offer so got the one with the display.

Well if it is to be done then best it is done quickly. Purchased my new road bike a week ago, and updated the spec, Trek Domane six series with dura ace group set, tubeless ready wheels with Bontrager trimmings *Clapping*

Right....

I don't suppose there's anyone in my neck of the woods that has an old racer lurking in the shed that they will lend or sell cheapish?

must have down tube shifters, be oldish ( around mid 80's or before) and be able to get up and running pretty easily, ie something I can chuck a new set of tyres and tubes at and maybe a chain.

Not really down your way, but I've got access to quite a few old road bikes that wouldn't take too much to get running again. I'm actually a bike mechanic, so if you needed, I'd get the bike done and post it to you. Just a thought if you get stick :)

Hey chaps, only just noticed this thread.
I ride dh, 4x (sometimes), and bmx at the local pump tracks and jumps.
Cannock is the nearest dh for us so we only go occasionally. We recently got the council to start building pump tracks, which is ace, and we are trying to build a local 'scene' around them.
Used to have a sweet set of jumps which got levelled, so we are in the process of building a new lot.

Dont do much xc really, only having a 4x bike or dh rig I'm shattered after the first hill *wink* Although it is fun flying past the xc whipits when im on the 4x bike on the downhill sections (they do come straight back past on anything flat or remotely up hill haha)

LOVE this.
Done a few of these now, they are going for silly money these days though :(
Its easy enough to get parts these days too, not that long ago you couldn't get things like the rod assemblies and the wheels.
