Hi mini13,
Great job you did !
I'm not sure you saw I did my 998 VNT MPi installation in the beginning of this year.
Unlike you I did not have external wastegate and it was a VNT15. I had a lot of problems to control the boost as the petrol combustion is much hotter than diesel so the turbine spins like hell. The other difficulty being to stay at 5psi because no I/C. I've tried everything and ended up with an RC servo controlling directly the VNT. And still too much boost above 4000 RPM.
So I decided to use an external wastegate the next time I'll work on this engine (perhaps in 2 years). I'll use the RC to control and the wastegate to limit boost, as a security feature to calm down the turbine because once it's engaged it does not stop spinning unless I close the throttle a bit.
Another point: as usually I've tried to make depend the boost on the pedal position which means being able to set any level of boost. Running only the max boost is easier but undrivable and not worth of all the ECU-related pain.

Thanks alpa!

I remember you posting the project but not in detail, i will go back and read through when im not trashed...

I feel with the smaller exhaust turbine is not big enought to limit boost and the extrenal wastebate will be needed.

Well,

I guess its about time i updated this....

first of heres a random pick of my bike that i uploaded by mistake... aparently its made from seawater.

OK, i have knocked up an rts clutch, this is an old pic, i have dithched these bolts for some capheads now.

have poped some gubbins in my gearbox case, note the bush on the 3rd motion shaft next to the pinion.

the bush is to fit a KAD pinion suport.

oooh! whats this? an atb diff? what shall i do with that...

I think i'll stick it here...

I did make a windage tray, but have pulled it out because it was fouling 1st gear:?

box and drops fitted

transfer cover (note the special holes to let the friction material out lol) and oil filter housing fitted.

and finally a lick of extra power green...(and yes i did miss a bit) should add another 50 hp, plus i painted the box too so that should take at least 400hp!!

also, I'm going to ditch the Kad 6 pots for these...

rally design, they are the uk distributor for wilwood, about 330 quid the pair incl vat & delivery.

pretty good value, really, have nice features like bleed screws in steel inserts so they won't seize as much, plus their not handed. only thing is they have a silly NPT hose thread, would have been nice if it was unf like the mini so i could have used the hoses on there...

Are all remote boxes 4-bolt fitting on the main bearing retainer? Hence the additional support?

I'm interested to know how easy the Willwoods are to fit. When I spoke to Rally design about them he put me off saying that the fitment was tricky as it was very tight.

I actually fancy some 2 pot wilwoods for the hillclimber.

Cheers lads,

the engine should be ready to swap at the weekend, dunno when i'll get time to do it

yep all remote box's are 4 bolt, hence the support.

Fitment wise for the wilwoods, we'll see.... the calipers i have are pretty big, but mine are radial mount so sholud be ok to deal with rather than their 2 pots which i think are lug mount. I'll try to size them up at the weekend. Oh incidently they'll be going on 10.5ish" inch dia discs.

The new lump is in!!

I now have more than 25 psi oil pressure.

what a bastard to swap out, took 4 full days although that did involve touching the valves back on their seats and reaming the guides, and a few other alterations along the way.

was dead woried at first as third gear was quite crunchey, but it seems to be getting better, must just be the new baulk rings.

have a few little things to sort out still, the rockers are hitting the cover, and the gaskets leaking a bit, the oil pressure wants lowering a bit (80-90psi at the mo),

also the vnt does not limit boost....

Oi! Don't break my boost gauge!

Home comes it is over-boosting? I thought that the VNT was just experimental at this point and the external wastegate was doing most of the work.

Well done for getting it all in though. I'll have to pay you a visit for a nose.

I disconnected the external gate to see if the VNT would limit the boost, apparently it dosent lol.

well not to any sensible level anyway,
