So, correct me if I'm wrong, I should hammer the turbo until I pass out. If I go higher than my MHR, I can up the rates in the zone calcs?

Sounds like a good idea....... not :)

No I never said you should! just said it very basically how they do it. :)

I seem to plateau at 166bpm. Just been out for a ride, spent an hour at around 130bpm, then hit a hill out of the valley back to the village. I've created a Strava segment for ease of analysis:

http://app.strava.com/rides/25955318#464348736

Hit the "Performance" tab to see the heart rate data.

Unfortunately I did not quite clear the top of the hill whilst I waited for youngun, but you can see how I got to 166bpm, got into oxygen debt and had to slow just before the top.

Looks like a nice ride, there’s a odd peak in HR at the start on a down hill section is a scary decent *wink*

Have you tried out Garmin connect? How’s Strava in comparison? I have used Strava on my phone a few times just seems to insight huge competition, not necessarily a bad thing…

Strava is great as it allows you to isolate parts of the ride as segments. You can use it to be competitive or just monitor your own performance.

My wife moans like hell when she loses her QOM positions and will actively seek to get them back, usually against girls less than half her age :)

I also use Garmin Connect because it also has some useful features. Plus if one of them loses my data, it's not gone forever.

That's a bit high Joe *surprised*

I'm the same, most of the last year I've been pushing hard to go faster when actually taking it steady would have burnt off more weight :(

You can probably see from my Strava data that I'm now going a lot slower.

I just looked at the whole log. You were in the red for the entire 11 miles.

That's like driving on the motorway at full throttle in an 850. It won't last long.

If you are 35 years old, then your maximum heart rate is 185 bpm. You maxed out at 182 bpm, so you nearly hit the limiter.

If you work on getting the weight down, then your heart will run slower for the same effort.

I've entered a 45 mile sportive in March next year. I'm going to work on getting my weight down with longer, slower rides with occaisional shorter sharper rides to keep the speed in my legs.

yep, never realized Ive been pushing that hard, been doing similar on 20-30 milers, and probably most of the 50miler the other week, although i did low down toward the end last 10 miles or so.

Ive dug the stepper out I'll try to get some hours in on that during the bad weather.

trouble is I find it hard not nailing it when out on the bike.

Find someone slower to ride with. Last week I dragged the youngest out with me. He gets along OK a steady pace but 2-3mph slower than I would normally with the wife.

Last couple of days I've dragged the injured wife out with me. She snatched her front brake on her road bike 2 weeks ago, went over the front and landed badly breaking a rib. She can now ride her MTB one handed, so she's back out with me, 40 slow miles over last two days :)

You know how I love numbers? Here's some interesting stats:

August, 205 miles, average 12.8mph, 4lb weight loss
September, 166 miles, average 14.7mph, zero weight loss
October, 142 miles, average 11.1mph, 2lb weight loss

So another case of "less is more" *oh well*

Overall I've lost 11lb in the last 12 months on 1300 miles, but 6lb in the last 3 months :)

stupid question but the weights you posted are you accounting for the fact that surely there's going to be some muscle increase and so although you may not be losing weight you actually are but fat.

does that make sense *tongue*

Yes, and you are correct. I've lost about 6 inches from my waistline which is much more significant in health terms.

Also, I've not changed my diet at all. If anything eating more to fuel the extra effort. I am a bit more concious about what I eat and how I cook though.

My trusty steed of the last 10 years is starting to show its age (like me, you may say:))

Bottom bracket is clicking, the forks are shot, stem sqeaks etc etc. Also I've been brought to a standstill on a muddy track with blocked brakes whilst the wife has just carried on with her new disc braked Spez.

As it was this morning:

It's dirty because I've just been out on it.

Looked at new bikes and could not find quite what I wanted. So I decided to upgrade what I've got.

New forks, wheels with discs, new oversized bars and stem, hydraulic disc brakes and a complete new drivetrain, cassette, chainset, derailiers, shifters and chain. Mainly Shimano XT or Deore stuff.

First job, put the discs and tyres on the wheels and put the caliper on the front forks:

shifted the chain into the spokes and shredded the rear wheel!

Whoops.

Just reading up on fitting it all together. Another trip to the local bike shop at the weekend to get all the special tools :(

Should be able to fit the forks OK.

Thanks for the offer.

Most my usual MTB tracks are flooded, so I may just crack on with the whole conversion over the weekend.

Stage 1 completed and successfully commissioned :)

Couldn't go far because of the floods, but feels like a different bike. Brakes actually work and it feels much more precise and stable. Love it :)

Oh yes. Them come pre-assembled and bled but the front pipe is a bit too long, so I need to shorten it and bleed it. More special tools required.
