One last thing, what is the AFR reading when you are driving, it is also lean?

No afr is about 14 to 13 cruise and about 12 full throttle.

Its very strange because if you have a blockage you will end up with a lean mixture on cruise and on power. The jet how much is bellow the surface of the ventury? Can you take a picture of it?

Well found a few things a miss.

I got the carb off to do a few checks. The throttle and coke seals are fine as I did do them a while ago.

Thought I'd check the mixture screw and the seal was perished. So changed that. (I must of forgotten to do it last time).
This was another odd thing....

Notice the one on the right is bent. Which would explain why I had to screw the screw in fully to get it to run.
I'm going to try and make a solid one and do away with the bi-metalic one as it can cause problems.

I also found a hole in a silicon hose as it comes out of the turbo. It was to close to the exhaust manifold.
Also the manifold gasket on the inlets had blown.

So hopefully the problem will be fixed once it's back together.

The intercooler hose hadn't actually melted through but I think over time it would have.

It passed MOT today aswel so I'm pleased with my days tinkering.

Wonder how the holder got bent like that!?

Cheers guys

Maybe it was over tightened.

So the other day I started making a solid jet holder. Doing away with the biggest metallic one.

I've used 0.8 stainless steel. Will I be ok to just tack it to the bracket? The rivets are very small and I'm not sure I can get hold of new one's. Even if I could my rivet gun doesn't do that small!

Cheers
Josh

Right got my holder tacked up fine. Got it all back together and she now idles smoothly. Decent throttle response, sits happy at 900rpm. AFR flicks between 12.6-13. seems happy at this is know 14.7 is ideal at idle though.
Have interesting thing with fuel pressure though. The needle on the gauge was flicking between 3psi and 4.5psi. turned pump on and off while engine on and it settled back down to a very steady 3psi once I turned it back in.
Any ideas what this could of been?

Also what setting should I set idle ignition timing to on megajolt?

What regulator are you using, and for ignition set it between 10 to 15 at idle, I don't like to set it below 10 because its start to generate too much heat on the exhaust manifold.

It's one I bought years ago that I think the guy used it on a turbo civic.
When I turn the engine off and pump obviously goes off, the gauge still shows 3psi for a while after engine shut down. I'm assuming this is normal?

The civic was fuel injected of carburetor, because a fuel injection regulator is not ideal for a carburetor application.

Well I took it out for a quick spin to as weather is nice. Going great. Then thought I'll just check the bleed valve works. Put my foot down a bit... Bleed valve works. Then there was a clonk which sounded like a stone going under the car. Thought oh better slow down. Got to the top of the hill and oil light came on. Engine off within seconds and stopped.

Here's what I found while at side of the road....

Yep there my crown wheel!!

Any thoughts on why this would happen? I have a ATB diff. I've done about 1000 miles with the gearbox as it is.

I'm just hoping I haven't fucked the crank, turbo and rest of the gears up!! What are the chances of the diff being ok?

Thanks
Josh

Holy shite! I have seen engine breathers in some strange places but I woikd not recommend having one there Josh.
I have on more than a few occasions come close to dragging my car into the field and firing it but I would only have to spend more time with the missis if I didn't have my mini to play with.
Hang in there mate, it's worth it in the end. It will be interesting to see what has caused it.

Cheers guys. Luckily she's very understanding!!

I should have it out by tonight. The bottom of the car is coated in oil so that's saved me a job of waxoiling it I guess!?

I'm just hoping it hasn't done too much damage to everything in there!!

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Having had a history of disasters myself all I’ll say is don’t walk away from it, I made that mistake.
It has been 10 years this year that mines been off the road and it’s only really been the last two I’ve had any enthusiasm for rebuilding it.
The path of least resistance offers least reward.

Well I got it out on the bench last night.

Found part of the problem....

There's a stud or remains of a bolt wedged in there.

No idea what it's from yet!
The only mark on the crown wheel is this...

Pinion looks untouched. But will look closer once engine and box split.

Could of been so much worse if it got wedged between the gears or went up and met the crank or something.

Am I right in thinking I'm going to have to rebuild the box into another casing? As the housings and boxes aren't interchangeable?

really the pinion and crown wheel should be a matched pair, I'd happily mismatch on a std engine, but on somthing like this probably not.

yeah the casings are bored as an assy so theres a chance you could end up with a missmatch and leaks,

another alternative would be to get it tigged up,
