Maybe so, each 20mm holes is only worth about 3gram. I'm 112g away from target.

Watch the starter motor mounting lugs, I did mine like that and they didnt last 2 events before breaking I seriously doubt it! |

Be interesting to see if it works. I have visions of going over a bump and the weight of the engine breaking it. I took alot out of the wok on the metro because of the different engine mounts but wasnt very brave with the trans case. |

It know it s a little extreme, I was worried about the starter lugs. It was originally done for a drag only 8-1CR turbo , not a high compression race engine, that will also see some road time. Think Ill play abit safer on v2. After all I don't want reliablity problems and not been able to run on pre paid trackdays for the sake of 250g. Class C 3rd Place Avon 2011 14.18 @101mph |

Wok looks fine to me, but as Dave says the starter lugs will snap sooner rather than later |

You wouldn't want to drop a spanner whilst the engine was running! |

With the alloy, I'm keeping it safe, I'm sticking with the KAD setup. Saved 711g in total inc alloy selector rod, Ti bolts etc. I know Chris Dillow took loads out of his, but it broke on the rolling road. Drilling allumium doesn't really save all that much. I figure I can achieve my sub 500kg, without taking to many risks.

Making good progress! I've also been pondering lightening my gear liknkage, has anyone tried or know if it would work/be safe/strong to use carbon fibre rods for the selector and the linkages?

Got carbon rods on my linkage, the alloy yoke in the selector housing snaps before they do. I've killed 3 so far :/ On 20th Oct, 2015 Tom Fenton said:

Looking at the thread, I havent noticed much about the engine. Given the block is cast iron, head is cast iron etc... I'm sure there is good potential there for maybe a kilogram or so removed from the castings without any real impact on strength ? On 24th Oct, 2015 jonny f said:

Just bought a die grinder, just need some advice on best carbides to use. Everyone I've tried as just got clogged up with alloy when attempting gearbox cases etc. Ive aready got 99% of the engine stuff already sorted. Just not posted up all the details yet. Again everything as been considered. I'm waiting on a batch of Titanium fixings, then the engine build can commence. Head is alumium 7 Port, and I'll be leaving it alone. I hope to sell it next year to make way for the 16v K head. I can't afford to go all out 16v and get it back on the road for year for Pod. Edited by alaskanow0 on 2nd Mar, 2015. With alloy lubricate your burrs with wd40. Otherwise nice coarse ones work well on alloy and fine ones on cast. |
