Blimey, less than 10 minutes and I've made a puddle on the floor *surprised*

That explains the towel then

Anyone on here use heart rate monitors and training zones?

I bought one a few weeks ago because I started getting chest pains after a hard session. Now riding a lot slower to stay safe :(

Not sure if they are a blessing or a curse :(

I would say a blessing, a bit less exercise is better than an early death mate!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Ive hada heart rate monitor watch a while, from what ive read/been told by a friend whos a pro runner, dependant on the work out your going for (finess / fat burning etc etc) the heart rate should be within a certain percentage of your maximum rate. My watch from decathlon beeps when i enter the zone and tells me if i go past the range. all good stuff.

just something i googled..

On a side note. do many people on here do any charity work on the bike? im not really a big bike rider but am thinking of competing in some charity riding events to raise some money for a certain charity. something decent though where you need to push yourself. A friend of mine has mentioned riding around the peak district?

I've been using the spreadsheet from that website. To burn the maximum amount of fat I need to ride in the 60-70% range of around 120-130bpm (I need to lose weight to keep up with the misses on the hills)

My maximum heart rate at 55 years old is 170bpm.

My first ride with the monitor was 30 miles in just over 2 hours. The monitor showed that my average heart rate was 142bpm peaking at 166bpm. Shit the bed *surprised*

On the plus side, my resting heart rate is only 45bpm.

yep, I spotted it on an article about wiggo's bike...

actually makes sense if you look at how they work, meant to be good for a 10% improvment.

Surely those odd shaped chainwheels are nothing that new? I had a mountain bike with Biopace oval chainwheels about 15 years ago.

your right, I'd never seen them before,

this is another varient on the idea, bit of a different profile compared to the biopace,

apparently eliptical ones date back to the turn of the century (ast)

I have to say from memories of that bike they really did bloody work, going up hills etc really was that bit easier.

It's an evolution of the Biospace idea.

If you look in detail, they are different for each leg effort over TDC. So a longer radius when the right leg is at TDC if the rider has a stronger right leg.

Evens out the torque applied at the rear wheel.

Tricky to change gear though. Wiggins dropped the chain as he went onto the small ring as he approach a climb in the Romandie time trial this year. He just stood by the bike and waited for the mechanic to jump out the car and give him the spare bike. He was still quicker than anyone else.

That's a bit extreme, even by TdF standards.

However, I do fancy doing one of the epic TdF climbs before I pop my clogs. Something like Alpe d'Huez or the magical Mont Ventoux.

Training zones are all very well, but it's good to know your actual V02 max, which if you go to a sports science type bloke he will put you on a turbo trainer plug you into a few thing and make you go faster and faster untill you basically pass out, because you can't get enough oxygen in your blood. the rule of thumb is usually very accurate, especily the younger generation but gets a bit out as you get older and your fairly fit. my old man (59) regularly passes 170bpm. if you have got close/hit the max you have entered for the zones your useing and not felt sick/gone dizzy it may be worth knocking it up a bit.

then again when getting in base miles (sitting in zone one all day) it does feel very very slow!

As for resting heart rate when the pro boys are at there peak they will quite often get up in the night and run up and down stairs a few times to keep it pumping. a chap called Miguel Indurain had something stupid like 30bpm resting and had to be woken up at night to stop cardiac arrest!

So, correct me if I'm wrong, I should hammer the turbo until I pass out. If I go higher than my MHR, I can up the rates in the zone calcs?

Sounds like a good idea....... not :)
