Went over to Simon's (MadMK1) house to pick up new subframe. Left my house at 6:30am and got there about 7:30 we agreed to meet at 8 so hung around for a bit till then and picked this bad boy up:

Gave it another coat on the side that faces the road as it was a little scratched and stuff.

Then it was all about getting the old one out:

Hoping to get new one built up and back on the car tomorrow, will sort hand brake while in there then all it needs is the solid mounts fitting and its ready to pass MOT :) Unfortunately I missed the postman by 10 mins and will have to send my dad to collect them on monday.

Cheers for reading!

Ive seen worse subframes. Seems strange about the bushes. They have to be really bad to fail an mot.

Progress has been happening!

I have forgotten to update this as I've suddenly been swamped with uni work and trying to get the bugger MOT'd

so here goes progress form the last 2 weeks:

I'd been getting angry phone calls off of both my grandad and my dad about the subframe, long story short I had missed that the trumpet knuckle on one side was broken (the plastic bit that goes in the radius arms) and so they had to remove it and then get a new one, then my dad remembered I asked him to put the rear mounts off, and then it had to come apart again haha anyway he eventually got it finished late thurs night and so I came back form Uni on the friday night and was determined to get up at 5am to get the bloody thing ready for an MOT the same day.

However

Lazy student set alarm for 6 and didnt get up till 7, early morning wishing it would fix itself haha:

After about 4 hours of solid working got it back like this:

I was also told I needed to solid mount the front subframe and so this happened next, I changed the pear drops and the rear mounts to sold, I havent changed the turret bolt bushes - will they really make any difference?

Anyway the solid mounts fit perfectly wheres the polys too forever to get right.

Old vs New:

You can even see the poly isnt quite the right shape.

Car failed the MOT on the hand break as it was crap still, even after I adjusted it on the lever and on the rear drums, my grandad dropped it off at the garage to have a look at it as I was back at uni during the weeks and they told me the entire rear break setup was fooked and needed re-furbing:

I came home thurs night and on Fri morning had a look and the new hand break levers are slightly longer, original AP parts, but it says in the paperwork that they help improve hand break performance:

Put New:
Brake Shoes
Brake cylinders
H Break levers

I took some pictures of each corner of the drum for the drivers side so I could remember how it went together and if anyone else needed help:

Bottom Left:

Bottom Right:

Whole Hub:

I adjusted the hand break lever so that you could raise it 6 clicks instead of the 3 it was at as well (under recommendation from MOT man who used to be into minis)

Eventually this was the result:

Now I just need some tax and its good for the road, however it runs rich still so needs a tune up after I get it run in and shes good for a couple years.

Funny how an "engine change" turned into a full mechanical restoration isnt it?

Now im going to enjoy it for a year or so then when I get a graduate job and have money coming in properly and comfortably shell be coming off the road again for a full resto and upgrades to 150bhp *happy*
