i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

I'm looking forward to seeing the built car on the scales. I'm wondering if all the individual savings add up when it's all stuck together.

Just get an air die grinder. That's if you have a Compressor? If not I am sure Andy could deliver one for you *wink* *happy* *wink*

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

If your going to get an electric die grinder it really needs to be with a flexi or you just wont be able to get it in anywhere.

Yes I looked at these, my mates bought a pair, they seem ok, but a little on the small size for me. Good weight saving though.

That's my worry. I'm 99% I've weighed every thing, it's just a case of if I can't achieve my predict losses per item. Tonight my target as been to get the pedal box down from 2.3kg to 1.7kg. So far I'm at 1.8kg. The main problem is most items where prevously lighten when I built the car up to 559kg prevously. I'm now looking for 100g not kgs. .

Are you dipping the shell and keeping an eye on how much paint goes on to it? It's pretty noticeable how thin the paint is on some lightweight builds. If you think, if you get 3 litres of paint on, that's over 3kg, plus primer filler etc.

It would be interesting to know what you can take out of it from pre dip to resprayed weight?

Got to say though, there is some amazing work gone into your weightloss! Keep it up!

Keep an eye out on eBay for a die grinder, I got my Evolution one for £35 it is 110v however, but I just use the transformer I got issued from work.

Evolution, some times get new items with very minor issues returned, they give the customer a replacement new one, fix the old one and sell them on eBay. They do 240v ones too but they sold out.

I do believe at some point in the past shells have been said blasted to remove metal. Obviously not wings and quarters etc but under arches and floors etc.

Depends if you got back to bare shell or not?

I plan to just removed all the underseal by hand over the next couple of months. I enquired about dipping, but concluded it was too expensive.

I dont think I'll skimp of the paint. I'm hoping for a show car finish.

Where did you look at dipping? I had my shell done at http://www.paint-strip.co.uk/. Much cheaper than surface processing etc and a good service. They even stored my trailer for me while they had the shell.

I was also concerned about acid eating away the shell long after it been dipped. The shell is very good anyway. I used sbout 4litres of underseal when I first built it. The shell had only done 23k at that point.

I may look at soda blasting though.

Out of curiosity did it not cross your mind to just start again with a different shell? It seams everything has been replaced anyway..

It didn't to be honest. I really didn't plan to get this carried away. Thing is I've now got loads of nice bits to build another mini in a few years. Im keeping hold of most of the bits. But space is limited, so the old roll cage and old seats need to go.

Ah i see... when you look at it like that its a brilliant excuse to do another one, just after everything your car was an immaculate mag featured turbo that coulda fetched a pretty penny and apart from skipping the normal welding work its a whole new project

They put an inhibitor on after the acid. It was stood a month or two after the dip and didn't corrode. Rick just had to flat it back before etch. Most of the paint etc comes of in the oven.

About £500-550 for cash. Just the bare shell and 2 subframes.

Thanks Andy, I rang them today, it sounds like a really good option. Did you have to primed?

I've had one done there too and I'm very happy. The other major plus over SPL is there is almost no waiting list and the turn around is quick too.
The only thing I would recommend is to get plenty of a good cavity wax in the sills etc as the process removes all organic stuff from everywhere!

I took it home with just the phosperous coating on it as I knew there was more metal work to do. They will powder prime it including all accessible cavities and bake it for you. I took mine up on a Saturday and missed them by a couple of hours. The owner came out even though he was in the middle of painting his house.

They didn't offer the priming when I had mine done, that would've been worthwhile too.
The phosphorous wash is good stuff - it's amazing how long the apparently bare steel will last without flash rusting with the stuff. Mine sat in a shirty garage for a good few weeks before it saw paint.
