Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem. |

Any other innovative lightened bits Carl? Paul I seriously doubt it! |

Obviously youve had no probs but with the hole down the centre it just strikes me that they could break. Its not to say anything bad of them you understand. If I was purely 1/4 mile I would do it.
I seriously doubt it! |

true what you say about forces,BUT there has been no modification to the part that breaks ,ie off by the nut the threaded part is not heat treated ,this is done i assume to keep the workable, this area is the weekest point by far and isa under a lot of tension ,both from the tightening the big nut and also extra tension as the drive flange tries to lever the bolt off when side loads are applied,

If your after some nice lightweight cv's have a look at these babies. These are the tripode ends i lopped of the end of a 2005 F1 drive shaft last week. The drive shaft is a tube with a wall thickness of around an 1/8th, thats 3.3mm for you metric boys.

As Nic says you need to allow for a multiplication factor due to it rotating. Anything rotating acts like a gyroscope and really resists accelaration. |

What you have there is the end of the driveshaft. The joint and shaft is actually one part (i chopped out the rest of the shaft). On the end of each lobe is a needle roller bearing that has a radioused OD (these can be ceramic). This rounded bearing face then runs in the outer part of the cv. This style of joint is great, much better than a cv, they are extremely efficient when at an angle. this style is fairly common in motorsport, buts its just one much nicer in F1 with silly money.
