I had a bini with similar. What it was was it missed the recall on the oil filter housing, when you put the newer filter in the old housing it doesnt filter the oil(youll see why if you hold the two side by side)

Anyway i scored a crank and set of rods off ebay, oil pump and bearings and filter housing from bmw. Stuck it all together and a new oil filter every other day for the next fortnight to catch the remaining dross and it was right as rain :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

In the last 2 pictures, what's up with the rod / cap mating surfaces? Is that just muck, or has the rod been munched?

Fracture split rod, thats how modern rods are, saves a lot in machining as all they do is machine the circular bearing journal to size then split the rod along the metallic grain structure. Result that the cap will go back exactly where it came from every time with no need for dowels etc.

That's pretty cool. I suppose they're also less likely to get misshaped over time. I've never wanted to take apart a modern engine as I'd imagine the cost of all the parts to be prohibitive. At least the gearbox is protected from all that debris.

Learn something new every day, i would have thought the rods would deform before breaking that 'cleanly'

They laser etch a small groove all the way around first off. I don't know the ins and outs of how they actually do it, at a guess they must then be heat treated after they have been split. I'll ask one of the tame metallurgy goons at work.

They might cool them first as that can make steels surprisingly brittle.

Reminded me of a demonstration of the Charpy Impact Test. It's not riveting viewing, but towards the end it gives an idea of how temperature affects how much energy is absorbed in deformation when you try to break steels.

Good evening all.

EVERYTHING GOT A LOT WORSE! as my old man said after seeing these photo's F**K my luck

Stripped out

Bore's look okay.

Oil pump full of engine remains.

Oil pump housing took a beating outside but looks okay

Lots and lots and lots of Iron & Aluminium deposits in the head around the valves.

Cam Bearings not looking very healthy or even there at all not sure how they run in the heads.

With the cam in the engine still you can see big black deposits of Metal around the oil ways and on the lobes.

This one was the worse one

Cam with debris all over it.

Engine Timing chain and guides looking sorry for them selfs they are all very broken cracked and pitted up. plus remains that didn't get to the sump.

Then where the guide sits behide it was this

Nice deep groove into the block.

You wouldn't believe this car drove fine would you? How the it did it I have no idea.

thanks for looking
Stephen

You take on more than most people would and that's a great way to learn, even if you only learn that you made a bad choice! Hopefully you won't end up too out-of-pocket.

Doner engine...... they can't be that expensive, i mean, i'm pretty sure you could buy two of those for the same price as a dodgey 1275 A series these days!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Sprocket currently looking at just a doner block but engines are about £700 plus the cooper S engine is completely different internally to a cooper engine :(

Phil it's cause I'm not bothered about getting stuck into a job I'd rather do it properly. Waiting on emails back to find out what's good and bad and go from there I Deffo think the block is a write off at the deepest part it's about 4-5mm deep that groove

I don't see the issue. New bearings rings oil pump timing chain and guides, thoroughly clean all the rest then get it back together.

Tom the cam bearing area is ruined I think the cam's in these run just in machined alloy and the groove in the block/head is putting me off rebuilding it at the moment

You need to measure the can clearances with plastigauge. If you still think its shot there's plenty of heads on ebay for cheap.

Don't known what part of the block is gouged, but if it's not a bearing surface and it hasn't punched through, does it matter?

Cam journals look like many others I have seen, as for the block that score isn't hurting anything, it would be rebuilt for me.

Like I said, you could by two of those for the cost of a dodgy 1275 these days *wink*

Check the wishbone bushes, I bet the 'rear' bush is buggered. We seem to be failing a lot of them on MOT tests for that reason. *hehe!*

All the common problem parts are sat in a box under my bed to go plus a few mode just need an engine now
