They come with the charging circuit integrated into them. It states 15v/20a max for charging so as long as you don't exceed that and the electronics do what they are supposed to do the cells should see what they want to see. (in theory!)

Good News! The car wont start with a normal battery on it so this whole thread has been pointless!

Bad News! £180 of starter motor appears to be buggered! Got it off the car and the motor does run when powered directly but the solenoid appears to 'chatter' and doesn't engage properly. When its on the car it just clicks and nothing. Not sure whats up with it, only 4 months old too.

Will have to resume the experiment when all is sorted!

The good LiFEPO4 batteries do have a control unit so the alternator doesn't fritz them. FWIR the earlier ones didn't.
I use a 1.1kg unit (moorcycle 12v 420 cca) on a na racecar, trickle
Lithium Ctek charger between meets

cranks it fine - but did notice the viscosity when outside temp was -3 Celsius

Woop it works!

After some fannying about with the starter it is working now.

I will leave it on there in the cold for a few days and try it again but as yet it looks good. Only time will tell what its life will be like and the car wont be in proper use until April-May time. I always think the best test is to just get it on there and see how it goes!

At the end of the day its a 900g battery and it just started the car 3 times in a row no bother so that pretty promising. 4.6kg saving over a Redtop 15 which would have been the lead acid of choice.

Well it was fine before i put it away for winter even after a couple of mishaps leaving the ignition on over night and running it flat.. Will give it a go later and see if it still has some charge. Im confident tho.

Just about the buy another couple for the race cars actually. Weight limit has been reduced for 2016 :)

Looking at the battery at the beginning of the thread, It would appear that according to the suppliers website they should not recieve more than 20A when charging. Considering alternator output could exceed this by 30A or so is this likely to cause issues?

Basically, you don't need to worry about it...

An alternator's Amp rating is just the maximum current it can supply. Most of the time, its providing a small fraction of its rated output. The batteries charging circuit shouldn't pull any more current than it needs.
