Evolotion has got me thinking that because the aux rad circuit is after the water pump before the thermostat to the aux rad and to the bottom of the main radiator. Is that really the best way? I know ERA did it that way and they were not cowboys, but, any thoughts?

From what you have said, I don't think your plumbing is standard...

Where is the thermostat installed? Is it on the head, under the spacer, or between the spacer and the main rad takeoff?
It is probably important that it is in the right place, whichever that is.

Export cars to Japan had air con UK models didnt so on non air con cars, the UK cars, the plumbing was different.
The thermostat is between the spacer and the top hose take off. As far as I can find out the microfiche shows the thermostat in the correct place. This must be wrong because the thermostat has to control the two rads. That has to be it.*Clapping*
No control of temperature on the aux rad because the outlet is below the termostat and to large a pump pulley. What a plonker I am *hehe!*
Thanks everyone I will put it back together and let you know the results

Not all ERA's had AC.

I've been looking at the exploded diagrams for the ERA and it shows the lower hose for the aux radiator returns to the bottom of the rad (where the electric fan switch would normally be), a rather interesting way increasing rad capacity, but it won't affect the normal coolant flow of the engine, warm or cold. The bottom rad hose is just a standard type used on the 1990's carb 1275 non cooper. The heater is fed with hot coolant from the take off on the head at cylinder 4 which then returns from the heater to the bottom hose, first through the inline control valve, through the inlet manifold and then to the single connection on the standard bottom rad hose.

I concur whith what someone else asked, where is the thermostat sitting in the thermostat housing? I would suggest that in this case it should still be sat in the head and NOT sat in the sandwich plate. That way the aux rad is only flowing coolant when the thermostat opens.

That seems the most logical conclusion (so long as your plumbing is as you say, standard)

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

also worth noting that the parts list suggests that the small water pump pulley was used

I'm amazed any had. That's some job back then squeezing a turbo in and A/C at the same time.

What's the bit over on the far drivers side of the engine bay ? Almost looks like a remote servo of some sort ?
