Looking good there Oli, can't wait to see the final outcome.

Life is always a matter of opinion and quite frankly, no ones opinion really matters.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments its never going to win show and shine but it should look acceptable for what it is. Going to have a go at painting this one, never done a full car-there is always my local bodyshop guy to rescue me if it all goes tits skywards, just need to get this initial welding, cleaning and hair/face covered in black dirt everynight stage out of the way.

Well only making baby steps, got one arch welded all the way round, think quarter is even more bent than before

And the next pics show the scale of what was needed with the rear, the seat back patched, bent to fook and no boot floor.

I got a fg boot floor but even the existing metal was not enough to be able to fix it in place, and was dubious about bolting the tank straight to the fg floor. So I got the grinder out and some light tubing, it all seems really solid but not sure if more diagonals are needed

Going to make a rear beam out of the rear sub chopped down with some extra mounts, so in prep for having coilovers decided to put a brace either side from shock top to cage, not ideal but should do the trick

Got the fuel tank central and just about as far back in the boot as it will go, the battery box will go passenger side between the heel board and bottom cage tube. Going to look at making ally or fibreglass panels to replace the rear seat.

Yep thats not bracing, thats supposed to be the support for fabricated rear panels as a seat replacement, its only light stuff but even this bit seems to be really stiff, any comments on coilover bracing ect welcome, I think its all strong enough.

Thinking fibre glass would be better for the sides around the wheel arches due to the complex shapes involved thinkingI can line it with thin card/tinfoil/foil tape
cover with release wax and cast the panels on car with a nice 1 inch lip to fix through inner arches, plus fixings through into the tubes, then just use flat sheet for centre bottom floor, seat back and parcel shelf.

I think the alu will be stiffer. I would just make a cardboard template and transfer it to the sheet alu. plus it would be a good excuse to go to that auto jumble again. *smiley*

If you do GF it Oli, you can add metal rod into it to strengthen it.

Right been a patchy week work wise so been getting some bits done, firstly after all the welding and chopping about it seemed easier at this stage to just bare metal the outside of the shell,

plus the layers and layers of paint on the car were really soft so with the help of a heat gun and 3/4 wood chisel all the old paint/filler came off like cheese and after a tidy a few wire cups/wheels

So I have it all now stripped and a base coat of red oxide ready to start bodywork over later, just the drivers side to finish after a few repairs

And as you will notice made a start on some alloy panels, made a home built panel swager but after a fruitless afternoon farting about with it and just ending up with lots of bits of ally sheet curled up like a boiled ham sandwitch at a funeral, I just decided that dimples in the panels would be just as acceptable and I had a dimpler up and running in about an hour lol

Dash bottom tray done and front, just need to make a top piece and some finishing needed, tried to make it all one piece but no way its going in with the cage in the way

rear panels, decided its easier to make in pieces and overlap, all going to be rivited and bonded in place/painted at the end

Here shows the sequence for a typical piece

cardboard template lol

sheet ally cut with extra for lips and a piece of mdf to bash the panel around

a bit of hammering

clamped, marked and trimmed to final size

and some dimples

Not perfect but should look ok when all sealed in with silkaflex and painted ect, these sides were the worst the boot centre, parcel shelf and seat back are reasonably straight forward flat panels.

Thanks chaps

Rob-John gave you a great piece of advice to just get your car on the road and tinker later, its a sound and well thought out idea which I chose to ignore and now the back end of my car looks like a daleks arse, so don't repeat my mistake!

Brett-It's funny because the more I look, the more I think fuck me I've ruined this poor car, although I could do to also loose weight fast but I don't think chopping lumps off is the answer

Leonard-my poor rover you Mofo's, getting moted on tues and all manner of comedy horns are in the post, I have a location for painting but we can pop to mine for a cuppa after, after all it will be done on 15 mins lol
