Its strange that the SA 1100 is not popular in SA, everybody wants a 1275. I think its mainly due to all the machining work involved to make the 1100 crank work with 1275 pistons. 1100 pistons havent been available since the '80s iirc.

"So wat we gonna do tonight Brain?"

Being making some slow progress over the past few months. Made fiberglass molds of the bonnet, front end and boot lid.

Final product was not bad, but if if do it again I'm sure I can get it better. Just a bit prep work to get it looking good.

Fitted the engine before finishing the paint job was not a good idea, should have finished the paint job first.

Spray job almost done

Roll cage fitted

Still got to have a bar welded in between the two uprights behind the seats

Got an aluminum fuel tank

Wilwood clutch and brake master cylinders

Turbo oil feed

Some random photos

I'm not too keen on the wheel arches

I have started the engine and had a short sneaky drive up and down the road, can't wait to get it done...

Any comment or advice will be appreciated.

Thanks for the comments. Been a bit lazy with doing regular updates though. Feeling more motivated to get it done as the end or is it the beginning is near.

Made some good progress the past few weeks. All the glass is in, air filter fitted, seat position adjusted, new steering wheel and seat belt harness in place. Taken it out for a short drive all seems ok, turbo boosting nicely to 0.5 bar and accelerates nicely when the boost comes in. Got a few things left to tidy up and make a pair of fibre glass headlight buckets.
[/URL]

Also fitted a pair of solid engine mounts

Added a breather pipe to the tappet cover and installed an oil catch tank, unfortunately the catch tank is too small need at a two litre

Soldered in the brass pipe

Will see it the aluminum radiator and electric fan keeps things cool... I have my doubts though I think I'm going to need an auxiliary radiator too.

Bought a wideband AFR gauge, installed it in a plastic box so I can remove it easily and use it in my other cars if needed.

All going well, I will be taking the mini out for the first time on Saturday.

Having taken the mini out for a track day a few weeks back and only doing a few slow laps the cabin filled with smoke, when returned to the pits I found the entire underside dripping with oil. After having a closer look I noticed I forgot to fit the blanking plate on the speedo drive. So the next two weeks or so I spent working on my mini and dads mini getting them ready for the race meeting this past Saturday. I arrived early Friday morning at the track for practice, was confident the Mini was ready. took the mini out for a few laps. I did not push it very hard, after 5 laps the temperature gauge moved towards 100. Returned to the pits and looked under the bonnet only to find oil dripping from the left hand side of the engine, what I thought was a leak from the speedo drive seemed to be a leak from between engine and gearbox. After some choice words and an attempt at fixing the leak I decided I had enough of minis and loaded the mini on the trailer and returned home. After a few days of neglecting the mini decided tonight I will remove and start stripping the engine.

After removing the timing chain cover, timing chain and back plate I found the cause of the oil leak, the rubber seal/gasket popped out.

Going finish stripping the engine tomorrow night and also remove the cylinder head, I want to make sure there is no sign of detonation.

Removed the cylinder head before I started work this morning, I think there is no sign of detonation, pistons look OK just no4 looks a lot darker than the rest, look ok?

Looks like its running rich

What is the best way to seal up between the gearbox and engine at no1 main bearing, I've heard that I should rather use a cork gasket than the rubber gasket?
