Tom, that is a flan, not a Pi......

Apparently a lot of people are calling them flans after they toast them.....

And I've come dangerously close a couple of times..... I nearly put 5V where there should only be 3.3 :)

I disagree Rod. That's definitely a pie as it has a pastry crust, a flan would have a sponge base.

A pie would have a pastry top...

That hasn't, the most it could be is a bake, not a pie.

Well down here in rural Suffolk we allways have tops on our pies, maybe it's a bit different up north :) :) :)

Would definitely be interested in one of your Pi serial/power boards, any chance that you will be selling a few?

You are more than welcome but the one you see is just a prototype - the fact you see ten is just because that's how the chinese/HK fabricators work, US$9.99 plus US$4 postage for ten 50x50 prototypes, ie less than £10 for ten PCBs delivered of which Graham and I only needed two...

As a prototype, there a few un-neccisary bits (to make swapping things easy), and one mistake requiring a track to be cut and a jumper wire soldered on the back (I allways make one mistake on a prototype :) )

Once the whole "system" is proven I'll get some more made, but if you want some of these in the meantime to play with, you are more than welcome. Obviously same applies to the final version.

Up and working....

Big thanks to Graham for the software (about 100 emails) and Phil (author of TS) for helping Graham.

BUT IT WORKS....

i am confused, are you going to have a screen in the car showing the data a la skyline?

Basically yes, what you see above is just the basic display.

Connected to an MS2/3, we think it can now display any of the MS2/3/IOx inputs.

Just design your own display, what you see above is just an "example" from the TS libraries

So an LCD display for as many guages as you want - subject to size - from an MS2/3 ECU

sounds good, i think you will have to limit the amount of data you display as screen size wont be massive.

Yes to both but Farnell don't (normally) screw you on postage.

3 Rod…
I'll need 2. One for the Clubman and 1, eventually for the convertible - when I get it finished.

Wolfie,
See my previous post on page 1. That’s a 9” screen in the photo.
I thought it was way too small until I got it mounted in the dash. Now I think it is just right.
I have this running on an emulator on my laptop and the emulation console size is about ½ smaller than that screen. Its actually fairly good visually.
There will be limitation to the number of gauges that it will be possible to display in any case, just due to the limitations of the Raspberry pi and the amount of resource java needs.

I’m just testing a better Linux distro with the proper FPU drivers, so we should have better graphics capabilities; also the latest beta version of TunerStudio, which apparently has a better “mathsParser” (??) which apparently makes TunerStudio perform better and there is a stripped down version of the TunerStudio ini file that Phil has produced, which will give gauge mode only, so again better performance and quicker load times.

All still trial, but still looking good!

Graham,

That's great to see that it seems to be a workable solution.

One concern I have is the screen: how good is the visibility outside in daylight. I know it's not really outside but you still want to be able to see your gauges all the time.

I''ve only had it running inside, off of the blueray play - the only device I have with composite output, so I cannot comment on how good it will be in car at the moment.

But for testing, the price of it was good.
If it is not up to the job and we can get the Rpi working at a good level I may invest a bit more in a screen - if necessary.

Time will tell, but how many people stick a SatNav with a suction cup right in the middle of their windscreen ??? Same display technology.

I don't use one myself but I've been in plenty of taxis on bright sunny days (in my rural area all taxis have them) and they are perfectly visible (and extremely annoying as they keep speaking as well)....

Well done both on getting it working:)

Are you able to get it to boot up and load TS on its own or would you still need a small keyboard and pointing device to load/connect?

I'd definitely be interested in one of the serial/power boards as well - would you be able to supply the components as well?

I believe that is the plan, it's on its way over to Graham now to implement the clever Linux bits.....

1 Yes, but note my earlier comment, these were just prototypes, once we have this fully working and Graham and I have decided on the best way to mount everything, I'll be revising the design and getting more made.
2 Yes, I have an account with Farnell so pay no postage on small orders.

Thanks for the offer of one of your prototype boards. I am not expecting delivery of my RPi for at least another 4 - 6 weeks (I was rather slow off the mark registering). Once I have it up and running I'll check back to see if your v2 is available. Otherwise, i may well take up the offer of a prototype board.

Thanks
Simon

If I can provide any help for this than I'd be more than willing to. I setup a debian distro the other day which boots in about 4 seconds and loads megatunix right up without any interaction.

I modified the distro so that it only had the bare essentials to allow it to boot extremely quickly.

Carl,

I think Megatunix is "probably" the best solution.

Graham and I started off down the TS route but I did say to Graham (rather cynically) that I thought David (MTx author) might want to see MTx perform better (as it's a native Linux build).

So far, the only other person, Brian in the USA ("unaclocker" on the forums) who has had the RPi running at all on TS/MTx hasn't actually had it connected to an MS2/3 but has show a VERY fast MTx load.

I've had it connect/run with TS on a real MS2, the hardware is over with Graham now for him to persue.

Do you actually have an RPi yet ???

If you do, I'll send you a complete power/serial board to connect it up - only the proto board but but it's proven to work.

Rod.

I don't have an RPi at the moment as I'm waiting for the next revision which will come with a case for the unit.

Thanks for the offer of the power/serial board but I will take a relative 'back seat' on this until I have something I can use it with. My mini project keeps getting pinned further and further back so I wouldnt have anything to test it with for some time, let alone on the bench. I'm just in a poor position to be able to accomodate the physical side of the RPi project that you and Graham are pioneering at the moment, but I'm still keen to help with the software related things where ever I can :)
