Steam cleaning of both cylinders 3 & 4 ????

The lowest cylinder pressure ocurrs during the intake stroke and that is when the outer cylinder will draw water through the break in the head gasket.

As the compression stroke starts in the outer cylinder, the inlet valve is still open and some water, now steam, could get pushed back into the 3&4 inlet port to be injested by the inner cylinder at the next inlet valve opening.

Does that make sense?

Yep, I follow you. I've never heard of this happening but it could be plausible, and 3 & 4 are certainly cleaner than I'd expect them to be.

Rod; couple more pictures. Hopefully I've captured whatever it is you think you can see?!

Not yet. It's a job for the weekend - need to get hold of something I can guarantee is straight first!

Unfortunately no...

This is what I was hoping to see an explanation for

It must just be a camera reflection, water, oil, when you took it apart...

Just some oil that'd run down the stud from the head I think Rod.

Actually I have a 600mm metal rule. Not convinced it's the best way to check it but it's worth a go as a cursory look. I might see if I can pop it on something at my mates' place and properly measure it...

We've got some proper ground straight edges at work, I'll see if I could borrow one if your mate can't help.

one day boost will be mine!

#4 is fairly clean as it has been solvent vapour cleaned imediately after the gasket blew.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
