For what it's worth, last week I seperated the two halves of the DMF

The left hand part is actually two parts laser welded together, I'm going to sperate them next week.

On the left hand part, the inner diameter bit and the outer diameter bit are essentialy one (until I remove the weld) and are the primary mass bolted to the crank tail. The blueish plate with the six ground off rivets is driven by a series of springs (which I can't see yet) and connects to the secondary mass (on the right) which is upside down for the photo. The clutch is connected to the "back" of the bit on the right.

As you can see, there has been massive fretting between the two halves where they have touched. They are not supposed to touch but when whatever inside fails, not only do you get a lot of rotational movement between the two parts, but there is so much axial play in this one that whenever the clutch pedal is depressed the two halves touch.

It's the metal filings from this that jam up the starter motor drive and kill the engine management as they end up all over the crank VR sensor (which is in the bellhousing as it reads teeth on the back of the flywheel) and it is magnetic.

Further pictures when I've machined the weld off to look at what's left of the springs.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Wintersurfer is still having trouble with his after a garage completed their second attempt at fixing his Mondeo.

Clutch DMF and slave have all been changed, but he still has sporadic gear engagement issues.
