Im having a log burner soon, cant wait, alot of people do seem to be going this way due to the cost of gas etc from what i can tell the avalibilty of wood is not that great! im having one because i work for a power distribution company and when clearing trees i see alot of waste, i hope to capitalise on this!! Anyway, i got a quote the other week from a stove company to supply and fit sed burner oh and install a liner to the chimney. anyways looks like this, AGA little wenlock SE £590 liner £380 fit £350. thoughts?...

I get a load of between 3 and 4 tons of kiln dried hardwood for £60 and have stockpiled about 4 years worth for our woodburner - just have a session with the sawbench once in a while.

I have three chains for my chainsaw and sharpen them and use them in rotation because at about £16 a throw I feel its time well spent.

I bought myself a cheepo chainsaw at the week end to hack at the rather large stump in the back garden. Excellent tool*happy* but the saw I bought is not man enough for the stump. even with a sharp chain, it doesn't like the center of the stump.

I need one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9x8rBKC4BE Kickback off of that must be a bitch!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Usually both stacks full with 2 rows of wood, and a smal stack is at the end of the car port.

Rod, out of interest, has the timber been treated? I've always been a little concerned with burning treated timber in 'confined' spaces ie indoors in an open fire

Rob, It's treated but myself (and my neighbour's) fires are enclosed multi-burners, not open fires....

Piped straight up through the chimney.

So we just destroy the ozone layer and not ourselves :)

My new chainsaw chains arrived today, £12 for two chains, and a pair of files for sharpening, I thought this was good value.

Tried it out on the small half dead conifer in the front garden, what a difference, Robert you had it spot on, it was throwing out big chunks of wood, not dust/powder like before. The difference is amazing, £12 well spent.

How do you 'size' them and how's best to sharpen them?

Andy, have a look on Google to see how to sharpen them.

Its important to ensure that the "rakers" are cut back if necessary when you sharpen the teeth otherwise they just rub instead of cutting.

Mine came off ebay, I just put in the model of my chainsaw and searched. A few different places popped up.

Another thing ticked of the 'things to do before I've killed myself trying to complete the list' list.

Anybody need any firewood?

The new chain is great. The cherry wasn't bad to cut through at all. Not bad for a first go at chopping a tree down. All limbs still attached and fully functional. Big ass conifer next.

He won't want the conifer Andy. It doesn't burn very well.
