Been reading this guide and have a question around this statement:

The new spacers need to be the length of the originals plus the thickness of the additional spring.

Surely that can't be right. If, for example, you are using 2 x 2mm springs. If you make the new spacers 2mm longer than the originals it will push the outer spring 4mm towards the wok (2mm spring plus 2mm extra n the spacers). In my mind, this knocks the whole lot out of alignment and is possibly the cause of the heavy pedal in some peoples cars.

What would be good is a side view of the assembly so you could see the setup better..

That is quite possibly the case. Surely all you're doing is still spacing to the underside of the spring which will be in the same position as usual therefore a standard size spacer would acheive the same thing.
If it's longer it will be pushing the first and second springs like you say further towards the wok.

In my mind it makes more sense to take the spacers smaller by the thickness of the additional spring to make sure it's external dimensions are the same as an unmodified unit.

andy, if you do that it wont fit together. or rather it will but the spacers will flap about as it bottoms out on the springs.

So roughly what thickness ideally should they be. I understand they all vary. And what ID and OD?

Got ya. I was thinking the spacer supported the spring, rather than the bolt/rivet.

Baker, reading the thread 11mm o.d. and 8mm i.d.

ID M8 clearance, OD 11mm,

length wise is tricky, the pivot rings can also be different diameters, 14mm should be more than enough just... but it could be a short as 11mm....

Yeah the ones we got from you Joe we had to trim them down for the van's RTS. That was with 2 x 998 AP spings.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

So can we say that you make the spaces to suit each individual clutch you take apart..

Yep,

springs range from 1.6mm to 2.4mm and IIRC Ive seen 2.2 and 3 mm pivot rings.

Can anyone recommend a torque setting for the bolts shown in joes sketch above?

yeah, the fly wheels is pants metal and not that thick, I'd agree with the above.

on the std set up consider the rivet is piss soft, we're replacing it with 12.9 grade which is way over the top IMO, but it helps with the tread in the fly wheel

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

after stripping a thread

prooving the point of poor engineering practices

Brett, it's not directed at you personally, it is merely you have experienced why it is poor engineering *wink*

Also, as the spacer is only thin walled you could crush it if you wang it up fooking tight.

if you can get it that tight without stripping the thread *wink*

poor engineering practices, as in taping a thread into what is essentially sheet steel where the thickness must be as small as 1/3 the diameter the hole i agree totally, the method you came up with obviously gets round this but is not 100% necessary imo

this particular one pulled through just whilst nipping it up and it did give me the opportunity to 'test' what torque they pull through at
25ftlbs ish feels more than tight enough, infact 18flbs ish has been tight enough so far

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*
