Thanks again for the comments and encouragement, helps keep the spirits up.

Seems like the dimples have gone down well.G13B - I dont have any pics but its basically a former & chaser to form the dimple built into a small homebuilt press.Took a couple of goes to get it right but it works quite well now *happy*

Phil - Glad it didnt sell in the end as well.Good to see its got you wanting to do a bit of work on yours,in the weather we have been getting you need all the encouragement you can get!

Tim - The 5-10k was from the mini7 club which I suspect was an optomistic figure to temp people in and then let them discover the horrible truth for themselves! *hehe!* Was the 49k for a startup season or just a very unlucky year?

Cheers Ross.

None, the guy was experienced and won the championship that year. It was the year Endaf was second (by one gear change*frown* ).

Very small update.

I got the a pillar gusset welded in today. It was a bit of a pig to do the inside edge as the window frame is right in the way of where you want the torch to be.Pleased with how it turned out as now both sides are matching.

Welded

Dressed back and given a coat of zinc primer as it was all I had handy

Cheers Ross.

cant wait to see this when its finished

how did you make the fake floor as am going to have to borrow the idea for my mini, is it going to be welded in or removable

For the drivers side I had a previous false floor that was already that was the wrong shape but gave me something to go off so just worked off the rough shape of that and cut out more/less where needed when I cut the new one.

For the passenger side I just took measurements of where I wanted it to fit & added on the bits that fold up the tunnel, probably easier to make templates from card or something first to be honest but I didnt have any to hand at the time.

They are made from 12g aluminium sheet so they are strong enough not to just buckle when you put some weight on them but thin enough that they dont add too much extra weight. To fix them I will probably used rivnuts with a closed end or just rivets as I dont suppose they will have to come up much once they are in place.

Cheers Ross.

Had a bit of garage time this afternoon and got one of the doors finished off,I had started to repair the hinge area last week but didnt have the time to finish it off.I think I mentioned earlier in the thread that I had put a couple of small patched into the hinge area and lip when I did the door bottoms but was never really happy with them so im having a go at saving them.

First job was to remove the outer skin where the hinge mounts (after the photo I gave it a clean up,rustproof it and give it a coat of weld through zinc primer).

Made a repair piece

Welded it in

Shaped it up to fit the leading edge of the door frame

I picked up a new welder last weekend to help the job along. Its a portamig 211,im really pleased with it - so much nicer to weld with and has a 3m euro torch and earth so I dont have to move the welder around all the time.Because I was too impatient to wait for some 0.6mm wire to arrive I welded up the lip section on with some 0.8mm which surprisingly was no trouble at all bar a bit more metal to clean up afterwards.

Here it is

Lip welded in

Shaped up and welds dressed back.

APBellamy has kindly loaned me his door skinning tool so the next job will be getting some door skins sorted out and get the other door ready to go.

Cheers Ross.

That looks like a good repair. I would have just chucked that on the scrap pile!

Thanks guys!

Andy - The scrap pile is by far the best place for them to be honest as by the time the centres are cut out there will be more new metal in them than there is original panel! I should have just bought a better pair to start with but its all good experience as I havnt been mig welding very long.

Benny - The welder is great, really nice to weld with and glad I spent the extra for it as I wasnt initially looking to spend as much as I did.

Cheers Ross.

Thanks Iain. Its nice to be able to get on with it at last, been murder just having to look at it sitting in the garage for most of last year!

I got the drivers door welded up today, pretty much the same steps as the passenger side as the rot was the same. There was one small extra bit to do replacing the lip near where the lock mounts but nothing too taxing.

I didn't bother taking many photos as you've seen them already but did get one on the phone of the welding now ive got used to the new welder. The first try of it on the passenger door needed quite a bit of work to trim back but this side needed hardly any trimming at all, much happier!

Awesome, top work.

One question are the front shock mounting points (to the body) are they the same as a standard mini or have they been changed to so the shock is on a slight angle rather than the upright set-up?

Someone said I should do it to my hill climb mini but vie never seen how it's been done.

Cheers Ben

If in doubt... flat out! The words of a true legend

Thanks for the comments guys.

Ben - The shock mounts are standard mounts but cut and re-welded further inboard towards the bulkhead, the subframe is also turreted slightly on the tower to allow room for the dampers at the new angle.(Hopefully that makes sense?)

Cheers Ross.

Ideal, yeah that's what I meant, would you be able to pop a pic up (when you have time) just so I can see how it's done.
