It has been entering my head that I could just turbo it on the cheap.
T2 or T3, opened up head, small intercooler...

That's pretty much what Wil did, he wrote an article about it: http://www.turbo-mini.com/62147.html :)

Cheers Phil!
Looks cheap and easy (as easy as engine building can be) and should satisfy my need for boost for a little while.

Another thing - re blocks - the early nat-asp blocks had solid upper/lower main shells, the turbo's always had the solid lower/grooved upper. They were standardised in '87 (ish) to the 'turbo' type.

Thanks Ben, I stand corrected

So I have a 998 in my garage that I have taken out of my project, the car is going 1293 turbo so the engine is going spare.

The spare 998 I have is pretty bloody solid and I thought I can build it up for a little power gain and then do an engine swap over a weekend.

I disagree with building a turbo lump "on the cheap"
Wil H make it sound like an easy swap but there are stuff to do on the sides that were already done on his car and I assume he gathered his parts for cheap over the years. But that might not be possible for you at the moment YOU are building.
And all in all, I bet it did cost him a fair few hundreds :
megajolt,
12G295 head,
mirage manifold,
T2,
intercooler,
SPi tank / return line,
downpipe,
turbo(ed) carb
fuel pressure regulator ...

Start counting ...

The way I see it, stick to your original project :
1293 turbo on the side with proper parts like a MS Xpin diff
and dirty quick HP for your 998 at a the cost of your twin carbs.

Stage 1,
940 head (I bet you can have a 202 for much less and it saves "machining" the pockets),
MG metro OR 266 cam.

All the money you save on the 998 built is available for better parts out of your 1293.

Do it right, do it once !

(actually that is what I am doing but I am not a good example as I'd rather not drive my mini than bodge it back together)

I totally agree with this. you are correct that I had lots of bits and the Megasquirt was already installed and I had a 295 available and a turbo.

Plus I'd done it before and knew what worked.

Then, without being rude, what the hell is the point of the article?

If you are talking to me, then the point of the article is to tell you what I think I would do in the same situation, given what you first tell us about your target.

If you feel I have no right to speak because I didn't built it already, then maybe it is rude.

But even so, I won't be rude and blame you.
If you feel like going for it, go for it.
All the parts I gathered I have a price tag for it and everything is in a post topped in the beginning of the 998 section => 600 quid

No, I mean the article on turbo minis by Wil about building a 998 turbo.

the point is to tell you how to build a 998 turbo that works to save the reader the heartache of trying stuff that potentially doesn't work, thus saving a lot of time money and greif.

Ho yes, the point of the article is to tell "look, it is not as hard as it sounds" but I underlined the fact that it is also not as cheap as it sounds as you started your thread by telling us you wanted to peep up you 998 on the cheap.
