Alright Guys

Thanks for previous comments *smiley*.

I have been enjoying a few hours of uninterrupted tinkering over the holidays.

Thought I would post a quick update on:

Rear beam that it finished earlier in the year

And cooling upgrade - I have been planning on doing it for a while and since my metty rad started leaking I ordered the stuff a few weeks back

The rest of the list looks like this :

Fixed loose drive shaft boot
Replaced timing cover oil seal
Fitted new expansion tank
Changed oil and filter after run in complete
Started fit up of new rad - Alloy MGF, it's big but will fit just, is still thin at 1", but need to change plumbing a bit and move up the IC a bit !
Fitted temp sender for mj for ignition correction
Will need to wire up relay for fan using mj as adjustable fan switch
Fit fan
Fit new rear slave cylinder and bleed

Comments welcome

Happy new year

Brocky

That is a fucking big radiator, but not surprised given your summers! Surprised you don't have an AC condensor on the list!

Hey Dave,

Yeh needs to be down here, it's nice and cool just now but when it's in the 80-90s the original set up struggles even with the stat out. 90-100+ June thru August, it just stays in the garage....

Plan is to try to be able to get to the point of over cooling and work back from that

Your not wrong on the ac, although I am getting acclimatized

Are you still in Kentucky ?

Cheers

Your car looks menacing in that pic. Great job with all the work and upgrades that you've done.

Thanks guys

EW - The book calls for 15/40 for the A+, but with the heat I've been using 20/50 which was what I would use in an A series. I must admit I do change it fairly frequently...

What do you both use in what I assume are both hot countries as well ?

Cheers

Brocky

Thanks *smiley*

Patience is the main thing, its the little things like not just being able to pop out and pick up a new gasket or slave cylinder etc...

I make alot of my own gaskets now, and adapt some stuff from here,

Scored on the spark plugs though, can get Cooler NGK plugs for around 2 pound 50 *smiley* They are used in a harley of al things.

Agreed, the fact it still retains it's original rear plate is a nice touch.

Mines a 1293 running conservative but adjustable boost at 0.3-0.5 bar and I'm using 20w50 with a golf1 front mount rad.

I bought my motor off a local chap already boosted but I'm under the impression that it's pretty stock inside so don't think it'll be long before it goes bang, that's the reason for the lower boost level and me being a noob at boosted A-series. In the interim I'm building up my original motor with the proper internals.

Thanks for the comments, always appreciated

Thought it was a shame to pull the plate off, it is the hand solder mirror line type, it was actually a cop here said there was no problem leaving it on as long as the Texas plate was visible...

Miniac

Yeh I went front mount and never looked back....

Good plan not to trash it if your not sure what's in there, typically the stock turbo crank and rods will be good, it's the gearbox and diff that need to be upgraded

Alright chaps

I've been working through the big front mount rad upgrade and while I was in there decided the original section of the black un crushable pipe had seen better days
(in background photo below) and had also suspected possible partial collapsing / choking at higher boost levels recently....

Have had some ss bends and silicone hose in the spare parts bin for years so thought would make use of it, might be a few grams heavier but looks nice and definitely won't be crushing...

Very tight fit - will remove breather next rebuild !

But still quite please with it and will sit in good flow from lower front valance hole, may add some ducting to ?

Comments welcome

Also just thinking....do I need a Tig welder for stainless? I know it's best for alloy, but think it's about time I got a welder and started making some bits to. *smiley*

No, you can buy various grades of stainless wire for MIG machines,

BUT, to get good stainless welds with MIG, you need to use pure argon as the shield gas, not the normal Argon/CO2 mix (called argoshield over here) that is usually used for mild steel, and certainly not the basic CO2 that some use for mild steel.

I did most of my exhaust with stainless MIG (it's quicker than TIG) but I have a cylinder of pure argon in my garage as well as the usual argoshield as I also have a TIG welder (which uses pure argon for virtually everything).
