Anodising - we'll see! Joe yes my thoughts on the chambers are similar - the chambers can be made very big if required for forced induction

head thickness is as per 12g940 - the iron 5 ports are cast smoothly, around hte plugs/top deck etc and the iron head is shorter at the heater oulet end - hence it looks bigger - having 4 ports out front makes it look chunkier as well.lol!

exh is std placement - the ports on this particular head are the max for an N/A motor.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm pleased everyone is enthusiastic as me - even after hundreds and hudreds of hours designing it!

When will we get flow bench figures?

I seriously doubt it!

flow bench figures will follow after the engine dyno - We need to give it some grief to see what it does - expect some youtube vids!

anyone is free to come over and sit at my cad station to look inside the head as much as they want!!

we do have a funky "rapid prototype" of the head as well - 3d printed over 16hours!!

We'll see how the testing goes and then make a final decision on exh port sizing - inlets will always be 36mm dia.

Why haven't you chosen to make the inlets downdraught like the early Weslake cross flow?
Would that cock up most modern FI systems, being mounted at an angle?

Ah John,,, im very dissappointed,,, a cam ontop would have been far far better & probably much easier too,,, what`s with you these days mate??? going backwards in your old age ???

Near Paris - France

OHC would require a specific cam or some rockers as the lifts on standart cams are done to work with a 1,25 ratio.

And you usally can't use an other car's cam as the valve sequence is not very common I guess.

I am being curious about the volume of water inside the head compared to a standart head.
Can we get this information roughly ?

As it would mean some work on the cooling departement including fine tuning wich might not be doable by everyone.

yeah but a it doesnt cost 500million dollars/pounds to make a cam to suit

Volume inside the head isn`t as important as "flow" & flow around the critical areas,,, same as volume of a rad isn`t as important as fins/gills per inch

Pulleys to drive an ohc are easy,,, cam is a bit of work yes, but would be a far better propersition exspecially for n/a

Just my thoughts from many years of toying with the idea,,, not that i know anything at all *smiley*
Edit--> & by no means do i mean to take anything away from this project at all,,, so please don`t get me wrong here,,, i fully & totally applaude John for taking the initiative & spending the time & money on yet another wonderful cyl head for our beloved mini,,, well done big time John,,, wish i had your time & equipment. knowlege & experience.

well done yet again

Just that i figured a little more time & money may have been well spent... are there any plans a-foot for an Ohc version John????

go on,,, just say yes & get on with it *smiley*

I positively hate the idea of an overhead cam. I believe the remit of this project was for a simple cheapish solution to getting rid of the 5 port problem and improving performance. An overhead cam totally goes away from this. As I have already stated the simplicity of the 7 port crossflow head is the important factor here. More power with other heads will be possible, but nowhere near as elegant.

Hi Matt - thanks for the comments - loving the vids of the crazy R1 powered car!, I have to say that at no way along the process was an OHC option looked at! Ben H summed up 100% the project brief. I'll keep the K as the SC OHC projects!

Water flow/temp is going to be monitored to the "N"th degree we have 5 thermocouples to go deep into the head by the chambers/along the exh ports, lots of external temp monitoring with temp range tabs and an infared gun for spot measurements. The benefits of running on the engine dyno is we can simulate lots of scenarios (without fan assisted cooling) that would be difficult when in a car.

Veg - theres no reason that it couldn't be a pure "downdraft" just clearance in the car, I think the semi downdrafts will work very well

How would these fit a 998? Or will it be the same as fitting a stock 1275 head?

I'd imagine yes, the same block pocketing would apply as fitting any other 1275 head on a small bore block.

Alloy 7 porters are all the rage.

I've been to Liecester this morning and was presented with a very tidy example, although cast.

5 Porters rule still for me.

Ive seen the cast one this morning too, I have pictures.

5 port for me too unless a 7 port only cost a quid, though Im very interested in it. I still want to see the car its going in.

Mr Whitton managed to extract large amounts of cash from me this morning. Alloy 5 port on order. Must have just missed you.

no worries John, i totally understand all that , appreciate & respect it fully.

However--> I have "helped" a friend of mine here in Aust (Bruce Ayres,,, Lionel`s son) set up an old ford x-flow head to suit single over-head cam application & we were toying with the same/similar idea for a brick,,, i was just figuring that with the market slowly being flooded with all the 7-port heads now that maybe a simple single overhead cam cyl-head conversion being avaliable might make it even more interesting *smiley*

I also wondered if you`d be the one keen enough to sort it all with all your money. time & machinery *smiley*,,, looks like an avenue for me to go even more broke attempting it myself yeah? *smiley*

& thanks for the comments on the R1 "thing" it is pretty wild hey? *smiley*

I have to say John that’s 1st class.

Also I like the way you've improved on the original idea.

Creating a proper modern day 7 port head.

As opposed to just reproducing the original system.

Don't get me wrong I think the new wave of the reproduced classic design is great news.

But If I was spending my money, I know the one I'd go for.

Now who’s going to start producing some engine blocks.

I've heard that Ford have just started to re-manufacture the old X flow due to popular demand.

But seeing as though Rover went down the pan.

May I put your name forward John.? *wink*
