Tried a T fillet today. Didn't go to well and I run out of ally. So only got 15 minutes practice in. :(

Very good for a first attempt!!!! Once you've found out the correct settings on the machine (looks quite good already) try and get a rhythm going for the hand fill of wire. The run on the right looks like your getting the hang of it. *Clapping*

J try knocking the gas back to about 5-6 cfm ( i think the gauge is in CFM) it might make the ark more stable

Mind, is my first attemp at a Tee. Did noticed the arc was bouncing all over the place at times.
Its just getting comfortable, need some proper TIG gloves. Found it abit better with the tungsten out further than normal. Will try turning the gas down a tag. I'll grab some more metal & rods tomorrow.

This is some of mine. I wont do close ups lol

Some turned out ok...some got dirty and ended up a mess. But in the end, it all sealed up ok.
Although the shit welding of the 2 core sections isnt mine. The end tanks are.
Oddly..one of my nicest looking welds leaked !! had to go over it again lol

Looks good to me Steve.
One thing I've noticed with ally...its alot harder to redo to pretty it up. All part of the learning game as they say.

very true,

once you get any shit in the weld its a nightmare to work with, even if you take it back with a carbide burr.

Cheers Paul...missed that thread. The offcuts I got were 5251 H22 ally...not sure what the fillers rods are. How did the intercooler go in the end?
All tips welcome.

I gave up after I found a Fiat unit the exact same shape.

The end tanks still sit on my bench and the core is packed away.

Did some more T fillets this week. After an hour and trying various methods...it still hasn't clicked! Hopefully it will after some more practice.

Talking to various different welders...they all seem to have different methods. Such as, arcing up on mildsteel first to create a ball on the end of the tungsten, try to run as parallel to the metal as possible including the filler rod, the way you grind the tungsten. Grind the tungsten along its length rather than across it.
Trying everything!

Turn the power down a touch, it takes longer to build up a pool but it will be more controlable as you go along the joint.
T fillets are difficult so for practice just do runs a piece of flat until you can get a nice shaped even weld line. As said above, keep the gas as little as possible without affecting the weld metal.
Youre doing well so far

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

leeds/wakefield.

i find fillets the easieat to do,
the trick is to have a big dia ceramic , you can then rest it on the job but the tungstone is still far enough away to do its job, so it hold at a steady distance, much better for those with an unsteady hand and little patiance as i have,

i think thats what mine is usually at, 6-8 somthings anyway, i assume its lpm,

i've found to much gas with too small a nozzle makes the arc wander, i guess it blows it about.

obviously you want to use as little gas as possible as its hadly cheap these days lol

Actually Carl, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I shall give it ago. I do the same with MIG welding, using the shroud as a guide. Never thought of doing it for TIG. Cheers dude :)

Having a chat with a welder at work....found another silly mistake I'm making...rod thickness!
So hopefully will get some more offcuts, 1.6mm rods, fit bigger shroud (cheers Carl) & up the gas pressure.

Are you still out on the beer?

I've been practicing this afternoon. It all went well (ish) until the gas ran out.

Come on Jason, I need some help with getting the Mitech settings right.

Apologies for thread hijack but need to get things moving.

Well, I've made an attempt to weld some 38mm OD 1.5mm wall tube together.

You can see where it went wrong. I think I may have touched the tungsten to the pool. Other side is even worse, loads of contamination and then too much heat trying to sort it out. I think my gas started to run out at this point.

Then I realised that something was amiss:

The tungstem had got much too hot and the cup fractured!

These are the settings I'm using, plus I use the foot pedal to give it a blast to start off.

I think that the foot pedal sends maximum amps when you floor it. Hence the damaged tungsten.
