shoot me down if this isn't a viable option for a reason i can't think of...

but could you just shorten the 2 outer strips of metal to just infront of the rivets/securing hole to lessen their effect on the centre strip?

Here are the pics of my suggestion, hopefully it makes it a bit clearer! still need to tidy up a little but you get the idea

standard bimetal strip in situ

modified bimetal strip against standard strip

modified bimetal strip against standard strip

modified bimetal strip in situ

anyone think this would be ok as an alternative?

It depends if the middle one is also a bi-metallic strip, or just spring steel!

I think you need to get a hair-dryer on it or hold it over the burner on the wife's cooker to check!

dave, could you advise why it would make a difference if the middle one was a bi-metallic strip?

i've not really got much knowledge on bi-metallic strips

I was thinking you'd need at least two dis-similar metals for it to actually move the jet

after looking at the strip arrangment the 2 outer strips have a small joggle at the end to provide contact to the very end of the middle strip, therefore could you assume it is only the outer 2 that have different thermal expansion rates?

A bi-metallic strip is just that... Two metals together. They are generally formed as one piece - which looks like a single strip of metal Thinking about the one in the carb, I understand what you mean, but why would you need three strips? Surely you'd only need the top (or bottom) one and the middle one.
Also - the bi-met strip bends because the metals are bonded together - basically the top half expands more than the bottom causing the strip to bend downwards (or vice versa). I can't see how if the top and bottom plates are dissimilar metals they could induce a 'bend' as they aren't bonded along their length...

Do the test and we'll know for sure if the middle one is a bi-met strip or spring steel. I suspect the former.

to make was about 10min job, used a small file to slit the strip then carefully pulled the strip up and down a couple of times and you get a nice clean break where you made the slit, repeat for the other side, then fettle a little with the file.

just got to do a quick test to see if the middle strip is bi-metal, should get chance when i get back from work later

Oh, you just removed the upper and lower "plate" I now see why you need to figure if the middle one is bi-metallic. If it isn't, I guess this mod is VERY simple in comparison to making an entire new one.
Please let us know..... :)

did the test, as dave suspected the middle strip is bi-metalic, infact there wasn't much difference between the modified one and the unmolested one,

fabricated jet holder it is then!

Drawing looks more than good enough to make the parts from, any fab shop worth their salt ought to be able to knock those out from the dwg!

Can you put me down for a couple of those if its not too cheeky *tongue*
