Think Hammerites quality has gone downhill. It used to be really good but the paint just doesnt seem to go on as well or protect as well anymore. |

I agree, its all gone health and safety on us, no paint today is what it was like 15 years back, bring back the solvent based stuff and isocyanites, you can always get an iron lung. 133.5 bhp 123 lb torque 116mph @6640rpm 9.5psi

Myself I have not been too impresed with POR stuff, A few items I have used it on have turned out good, but I would say 60% of the items I have used it for it has peeled off or has lifted and starting to corrode underneath not impressed for the cost of the stuff.

Neil I put some on a wheel arch I had patched up and not sealed the welds. After I had towed the car in the wet I had some little bits of rust coming through the paint. Everywhere else I've used it is fine. I'm going to sort that by cutting the wheel arch out and putting a new one it... On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

im really surprised at that i use it on everything now, and have never seen it peel? are you using metal ready first? yup all directions followed, I have had new metal do it and old slightly rusty metal do it, which is ment to be ok and give better adhesion!. I use metal ready etc and still use this to dip stuff as that seems to work well, but thinking of trying something else paint wise next. I even overcoat the POR with the correct POR Chassis black which gives it the UV protection and still I have had some peel off, it apears as soon as the moisture gets under it thats it the whole paint film starts to fail. With my alternator bracket recently where it had started to lift I just picked the raised edge and just peeled it off and the corrosion underneath was intense. this was only painted about 18 months ago. On the opposite side of the coin my rear uprights still look good and these where prepped in the same way and where brand new! As i say I have had mixed results but when it doesnt work it really seems to be bad. Neil Edited by SidewaysGTM on 28th Apr, 2010. ive taken the inside of my mini down to a mix between bare steel and primer (that was already on the car) and i admit the hammerite diddnt like to stick to the bare steel bits but it went on great on the painted bits. however it needed at least 2 coats to make it completely black and its not chipped since i had applied it. it went tacky in 30mins or so then i repainted it. once yo u have a layer over the bare steel (see through or not) i think this provides something for the 2nd coat to stick on, and when it goes off completely it will be ok? mines been fine so far |

I've had no problems with Hammerite on my car - and thats saying something considering its painted top to bottom, inside and out with it. Literally.

I'd never use hammerite - Only seems to be good for promoting rust under it. Save it for garden gates.

Im going to bring this one up again. Ive just recently painted the whole of my lil rascal van in "smooth" blue hammerite. I used a foam roller and a brush! I keyed the surface with ermery and wiped it down with thinners first. Ok its not a perfect job but im not arsed. From a distance it actually looks quite good. Its just up close that you can see the roller and brush strokes. hahaha |
