I'll weigh my roof skin and measure the thickness tomorrow evening.

Also, your calculations don't allow for the lip of the original roof that you need to leave to bond the new roof to. I'm gussing you'd need about 50mm all the way round the roof.

I would have done it a long time ago if it weren't for the fact I don't have a welded in cage up the A/B/C pillars and would worry about structural integrity

Paul the Mig does have a welded in cage doesn't it? - go for it Sturgeo - if it is a full cage I'd go for the lightest single skin one I could find and use as little bond agent as you can get away with- sorry Paul your wallet will recover!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

that would be handy, bond edge only needs to be an inch at most - I haven't counted the heavy paint on the Migs steel roof either.lol!

i measured the widedst bit of the roof, i was thinking that the radiused corners will roughly allow for the extra material used in the bends and lips etc,

it will be intreresting to see how close we estimated it.

sturgio, I reckon a ti roof will be best LOL

I'll add you to the list *happy*

Actually we may have a vacancy as "Evolution Studio 2" is planning to move to Thailand in September.

TDK ones are a really nice finish, he's the main supplier for all the other places abs styling etc. But unless your leaving it bare carbon, i wouldn't bother as there is bugger all weight difference.

Yeah it'll be bare carbon, the old boy wants a black roof on it anyway.

Make sure it is proper carbon then it will be feather weight, if its just the usuall crap its just fiberglass with carbon layre over it so not realy any weight saving over a standard fiberglass.

Rick.

ps, id stil have a word with paul about an alloy one and bond that insted.

My British Open has a gurt big hole in the roof as standard and I don't think rover did anything to stiffen it up.

The only thing I would say is that a composite roof will definitely put you sports libra in sprinting/hilclimbing. So if you are considering any competition in the future it is not a great idea.

That's the way I read the rules as well but could you make a case that a full steel roof is not needed as Rover made production cars with the majority of the steel roof cut out?

My clubman had a webastow and nothing more than about 8 pop rivets and a few bolts to hold it all into the roof. I doubt it did much if anything to provide any support.

From moving it around, I very much doubt the new skin weighs 20KG. It's awkward to move, but it's not particularly heavy - think about the amount of metal that goes into a 20KG dumb bell and then compare it to that in a roof skin....

I wouldn't do it. A mig will never be the lightest car in the world as the cage is so massive. So whatever you do you'll never get it as light as the DON or Nic's.

Basically, if you want to win class D, don't start with a Mig.

Look at what Force racing sell, much better way to spend your money.

I was considering one for my car when i had the roof cut off, the problem is most of them don't fit and go milky and some have a join line down them (which i personally don't like) so thought about a fibreglass one, however Peter Vickers didn't recommend them as they bow in when doing more than 70mph. Fitted a steel one in the end (got rid of the heavy sunroof though).
