joey,

you might find that the tothed alternator pully is too big and doesent charge at idle.

it may be ok on a normal mini, but with anFI ecu, lecy, water pump, lecky fan, high watage headlamps, its draining my battry at idle.

I am in the process of fitting a smaller pulley.

Joe,

At what RPM does it start to charge? I am thinking about converting mine, and I have an idle of about 1500, would that be okay? I am not idling that much, so should be a real problem even with EFI, but would like to avoid it if possible

Joe I found the same, mine started to charge at about 1500RPM, although the 45A alternator did struggle to run all my electrics. On a 5 port it would be fine though. *oh well*

Electric water pump, 4 injectors, electric fuel pump, coil, electric fan, ecu, lambda heater, lights + general electrics.

I have now switched back to my Matiz alternator as that is a 60A and it seems fine.

Andre you're running almost exactly the same electrcal components as me do you find the alternator copes ok with the load?

Yes, I have had no issue with it. I have calculated it to cope aswell.

I am running the waterpump, 4 injectors, 4 cops (may save SOME), ecu (neglible) and fuel pump.

The fan have never turned on, and I am running open loop, so no heater on the lambda, I am using the lights when driving though. Thats it.

EDIT: it charges on low revs too for me, The light started to turn on when I had around 1100 rpm I think, but I dont generally idle that low anyway :)

Oh right, mine idles at 900rpm and you can watch the volt gauge drop to 12volts then when I increase the revs it goes up to 14volts or so. To be honest I think it is my fan that is the thing that just overloads it, before I had the ignition timing set up the engine used to run a little warm so had the fan on alot. Have you put a resistor inthe power supply to the pump to slow it down a tad?

I have not modded the water pump feed. Its pumping 80 liters a minute:) When I turn the fan and pump on after a spirited drive (after stopping the engine) I can actually see the temp gauge falling quickly downwards:)

Same here its great *happy* you can drop the engine temps by 20 degrees odd in a couple of minutes! No more heat soak! *wink*

theyre modified minispares oned jon, the boss on them is too thck, so you have to thin them down to get enough thread through to get the nut on

checking my datalogs it appears mine only goes above 12v above approx 2000 rpm, although the light oly comes on if the revs drop to about 700 rpm.

I have had a dig about and sorced a pully from here.

http://www.powertransmissiononline.co.uk/P...rch&Category=55

mine is part no 18L075PB but it is a little wide, as i hadn't sused out the part no'ing system, the 18 refers to the no of teeth, the L is the type of teeth, the 075 is the width of the belt in inches, so 3/4" in this case, and the PB is pilot bored. i think should have gone for an 18L050PB.

you can search the part no's for descriptions on fish4.

http://fish4parts.co.uk/Mechanical.80/Chai...5.TB.69629.html

also these pullys are steel so fairly heavy, but are pretty cheap.

mine has plenty, had to machine about 10mm of the back face, might need a bit more yet.

when I idle at 1400-1500 rpm I have 13.4 V. I am running a Vee belt with the standard pulley on botth the crank (s version like joe) and on the alternator (which I got from Matty)

ok, Joey

did some calcs last night,

at 1000 rpm the minispares toothed setup gives approx 900 rpm at the alternator, with this setup mine seems to start charging just below 2000 revs(2000 is 1800 at the alt).

with the 18 tooth pully i have modded at 1000 rpm the alternator will be turning just under 1800 rpm.

at 6k the 18 tooth will give 10500 rpm at the alt.

oh and it seems like a 51-52 tooth belt will do the trick with the larger waterpump pulley.

ive never thought about this until now, but what the max/desirable rpm you can/should run the alternator?

ok pursuing this through to its absolute fruition.....

i bought a couple of the 18L050PB pully's and they work a treat, the ofset is perfect straight away, all you need to do is take the hole out to 15mm for the alternator shaft and then machine the middle out to 30-32mm leaving the back face 3mm thick so you can get the nut and a socket in.

straight away at a slow idle 700rpm? i'm geting 12.6 v at the battery, sorted!
