Was your subframes painted or powder coated?

Subframes was first sandblasted, then powder coated and finally painted with that same silver that the roof is painted.

This is looking like a high standard build, well done.

I have my subframes powdercoated aswell and on the front where the exhaust runs where it gets too hot the powdercoat just peeled away. May be a word of warning to ya *wink* as it's a fanatastic build and you don't want to go ruining it now hehe.

That's good to know, eventhough there is nothing to do for the paint work anymore. I think I can use heat isulating tape for downpipe where it goes near the subframe.

Why's that? I thought you just make a cut out in the arch abit like the one for the seam, for the bottom hinge to fit through? which it looks like he has done.

Looks great by the way. keep it up!

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

I got some progress in my project when I finally got my head back from machine shop. I have ported cylinder head by myself and Wizard's Tuning A-series book. Hopefully it flows a bit better than standard. First it has compression ratio 7.76:1 but we thake 1mm off the head so the comp.ratio rise to 8.2:1...

First I painted it.

Then I istalled it to block and put the rockers on.

and then I turboed it.

Tomorrow I have to make oil return hoses. I also installed the knoking sensor for MS. I know that this is not the best place for it, but hopefully it works. Does anyone tried this sensor in MS???

I also but the fuel and brake lines inside the car.

What do you mean by MS - just in case our language differences have a different meaning.....

I mean Mega Squirt. Knoking sensor should "hear" if knocking occurs and then mega squirt knows to retard the ingnition. I have MS only to control ignition.

I guessed it was MegaSquirt, just wanted to be sure....

Shame it's just for ignition though !!!

I haven't finished building mine yet but I still have a couple of spare processor ports and had considered knock sensing - everything I've read so far though, suggests there is too much mechanical valve train noise on an A series for it to work well,

So it will be interesting to see how you get on.

Which module / control box are you using and which make of sensor ???

I very much doubt that the knock control of MS is just 'plug and play'
To make full use of any system like this there would have to be a reasonable amount of dyno/rolling road work to calibrate the output of your sensor in your location, to know the level of knock, if its real and not just mechanical noise and also know how much ignition retard to allow.
Good luck though!

This Knocking detection is one of systems that I will do after I have the mini on the road. I'll do the electronic for this myself, and I know that it is really not plug and play, is should fine tune in rolling road and oscilloscope. I plan to use this only for safety, so that I can drive a bit higher boost safely.

Last weekend I got the engine in.

And I'm happy that the turbo fits, and in fact there is 5mm free space between actuator and bulkhead.

how have i missed this thread!

this is looking very nice :)

for the Knock sensor i think a good position would be on one of the alternator bounting bolts on the front of the block, as it is near the cylinders but on the other side of the engine to the cam followers.

also, the clutch slave cylinder looks like it may not have much travel in the pictures.

I think I will put the knock sensor to that upper(or lower) alternator mounting bolt hole. I just need to modificate the alternator bracket.

My main goal was that I can drive to Finnish mini meeting in 17 july, but now it seems that it's too soon, but hopefully I got at least motor running.

I think that I will do this engine setup first without intercooler, then next winter I will find some good place for it. Any suggestions???
